Honestly, even though Banjo isn't nearly as commonly used as Wolf or Palutena, I still see way more Banjo's in tournaments than most other mid-tiers like Luigi or Pit, even with the high learning curve. It's actually pretty cool to see fans making it work, even if the character isn't the optimal tournament pick.

Ultimate was one hell of a trip for me. I started using my sm4sh mains (sonic/megaman) until I decided to give Ryu a shot since I never used him. Sucked with him but at the same time loved using him.
Never heard of Terry before he was revealed, but after researching who he was/SNK as a whole I'm surprised he wasn't in sooner. Easily one of the most fleshed out characters smash has seen.

Maybe so, but even with all the restrictions of the competitive ruleset, smash is unpredictable and inconsistent, and treating it so seriously will only lead to anger and resentment when situations don't fall in your favor when they may have done previously.
Basically, people need to relax more about this stuff, and having a main really limits the enjoyment you can get out of a game like this.

The similarity between characters allow for a lot of transferable skills, but aside from two or three echoes very few fighters will have the same options in a given matchup.
Having a character you are best at, and use often, is fine, who wouldn't use their best guy in a tournament for example? But when people say they "main" a character they often mean "I will almost never play as anyone but this fighter".
