It's like Zelda OoT and Wind Waker. The Doomguy is like the Hero of Time and inspires the Sentinels. The greatest Sentinel champion inherits his legacy and his motto ("Rip and Tear"), with his helmet being used as a relic in the ritual where the champion becomes the Slayer. The reason that King Novik and the Betrayer treat the Slayer as an outsider is because he holds the symbolic mantle of the outsider.
