I'm trying to get into the Resident Evil franchise, but every game has so many different versions. What's the best version/platform for each of the games?

they're all the same shit, just play whichever you want.

Depends on where you want to start.

So, my personal favorite version of 1 is the REmake. You can get that on PS4 and everything else while the original version you can get from anywhere. After that I prefer the original RE2 over its remake but most people like the new version. Take your pick if you prefer the newer, prettier version or the original that has the same feel as 1 and its remake.

3 has a complicated history. The game that's named 3 is a spin off and the actual 3rd title is called code Veronica. The remake of 3 is coming out soon and Code Veronica is available anywhere as an HD port or a PS2 upscale.

4 is 4. Take your pick of platform.

RE is best on whichever has updated controls. Tank controls are a bitch nowadays.
RE2 is best on the PS4 remake.
RE3 will be the same case when it comes out.
RE4 is best on GC.
RE5and RE6 don't matter.

Is this an attempt to make a general RE discussion thread or are you too lazy to actually look shit up thats easily and readily available?

I played the first 3 on PSX and they were good. I think the PC version of 3 is better but I didn't want to search for mods and controller supports so I went this mednafen

RE2 on N64

What platforms do you own?

RE1-RE3 PC ports with pretty much everything be fine no matter the version you have.
Also play in release order.

emulate the game cube versions of 2 and 3 and use the hd project

Kill yourself, subhuman cretin.

for an experience that can be enjoyed by someone that dislikes old looking games.

RE1 HD > RE0 HD > RE 2 remake > (if you don’t hate tank controls play the original versions, add code Veronica here if you like tank controls) RE4 (replace with RE 3 and then play 4 HD if 3make is out by the time you get here) > RE5 > RE 7

Don’t worry about the episodic games, they’re all pretty meh

PC/Dreamcast (and maybe gamecube?) versions of 2 are also superior to the other ports and original release on Playstation.
For RE1, op should play the original longbox ps1 version if he has original hardware and a crt display. Otherwise play REmake

RE1 on DS. Alternatively you could emulate RE1 Director's Cut but NOT THE DUALSHOCK EDITION! That changed the soundtrack to be shitty.

As for the rest.

Everything after that aside from Code Veronica and spin-offs are available on Steam pretty much.

RE1 - DS
RE2/3 - GC

The original RE2 has console specific alternate costumes you can get by killing zombie Brad, so take your pick.

RE0 on Gamecube
REmake on Gamecube (HD blur filter ports are shit) over RE1 it has not aged well
RE2 on Dreamcast for original, RE2make is also good both should be played
RE3 on Dreamcast for original, RE3make isn't out quite yet so it can wait
RE4 on Wii since it has the gamecube visuals and audio with the PS2 extras
RE5 Gold Edition on the console of your choice they're the same
RE6 same deal play on whatever
Code Veronica X on PS2 though the game is shit
Revelations on PS3
Revelations 2 on PS3

Skip RE7 it's pure shit and also not even a Resident Evil game, beware there is a shill still lurking like there is with Barry for FF15.

>Skip RE7 it's pure shit
Ok retard.

fuck off marketer-kun

>skip 7 but not 5/6

Sure whatever you say VRtuber

Take your meds.

One day I hope that mod for the RE1 DC Dualshock that restores the music and enhances it further with decensored cutscenes gets totally finished and just about bug-free.

>being a zoomer unironically

5 was okay. 6 was mediocre. 7 was pure shit.

what is it about 7 that makes you so goddamn assmad, you're just the same as the person you're complaining about since I see this shit in RE threads even when it isn't relevant

7 was way better than the putrid shit 6. 5 is debatable but not when you consider it more of an RE game than 7

Let's play spot the samefag

Actual mental illness.

RE7 was a great game, just not a traditional Resident Evil game. It also doesn't really add anything to the narrative, and honestly it should have been a spin off RE game like the Revelations.

Imagine defending an outlast reskin made for youtube streamer reaction videos.

Imagine saying that RE7 is nothing like Resident Evil when it literally takes places in a residence.

youtube.com/watch?v=nPw9HIH8D9Y
Yeah when I see this I totally think resident evil going back to it's roots, fuck off.

With evil, at that

>reeeee why does an enemy use a car as a weapon when it's readily available

>first person walking simulator
>hillbillies
>SAW shit
>Hostile shit
>Cawadoody ketcheup screen
>2 enemies the entire game
>cast are all literal whos no one cares about
>protagonist isn't even a character
>this shit

Yeah it's a game made for normies and Capcom wanted to chase the VR bux

newsflash sherlock, every triple-A game is made for normies and you just pretend you have a special club of cool people that like what you like

I'm glad Capcom saw the negative reaction to 7 and gave us RE2make and RE3make instead as an apology.

>not a traditional Resident Evil game
>takes places in a residence
>has puzzles
>key hunting
>item management
>has limited saves in madhouse
>return of shotgun puzzle

Doesn’t it add the fact that there are multiple organizations in the black market that are making bioweapons, and that Umbrella is working to fix their mistakes and stop BOWs now? And that the BSAA trusts them enough to give them Chris Redfield.

RE6 was the game that implied there was a bigger faction at large that Simmons was tied to, and Blue Umbrella is a new company trying to amend the sins of the original Umbrella. Chris is kind of pissy about it but losing yet another squad makes him kind of forget about that.

>RE7 shits on established lore just because
shit game

Play RE 1-3 on PS1 first and foremost, with the original graphics and glorious tank controls the way god intended. the rest aren't as important, play those at your leisure

Is Chris just bad luck? How does this guy consistently have his team die every single time?

Because he's HUNK not Chris.

>RE4 is best on GC.
Factually wrong
best RE4 port is PC or Wii

Chris and HUNK both consistently lose their teams a lot.

name a SINGLE RE game since... fucking THREE that didn't shit over it's own lore.

How does it shit on established lore.

Jackass and Grinder spin-off when

RE on DS.
RE2 on N64
RE3 on GC.

RE0:Remake - PC
RE1: Remake - PC
RE2 (Original) - PC
RE3 (Oiriginal) - PC
RE4 - PC
RE5, 6 , 7 - doesn't matter

meant to say RE0 HD Remaster* - PC

Start from the begining, play RE remake first, don't play then originals unless you like the tank control option in REmake.
Play RE2re next
wait for 3make if you don't like the new controls
RE4 is good anywhere, widely considered one of the best games ever made, it's pretty good
RE5 is worth a playthrough as well as mercs, bring a friend for maximum fun
re6 is just shit unless you have a friend, mercs is stupidly good
re7 is just re1 with less enemies and in first person, pretty good game

If you still like the series after this, then you can try the revelations spin offs and re0. If you want a more fun shooty thing try the light gun games on the wii, if you liked the tank controls on remake, play the og games at your leisure.

sourcenext for re1 and re2

Japanese version being less censored is implied
RE1
>PSX (Black Label)
Bare bones original version, has the two campaigns and not much else.
>Director's Cut (Black Label)
Adds the incredibly fun Advanced Mode and more costumes with it.
>Director's Cut Dualshock (GH Label)
Renamed Advanced to Arranged and changed the soundtrack. This is the version on North American PSN (PS3/PSP/PSV).
>Saturn
Rare, but adds the first iteration of RE's Battle Game.
>PC
Adds a few extra costumes and weapons, as well as door skipping
>DS
Reworks a lot of the gameplay elements and adds the DS Exclusive Rebirth Mode

RE2
>PSX (Black Label)
Has both characters, 4th Survivor and Tofu Survivor
>PSX (GH Label)
Adds EX Battle Mode, is the version on PSN
>N64
Same as PSX Black Label, but adds the Randomizer mode and EX Files
>PC
Same as GH Label but adds some portrait and model viewers, as well as a hard mode.
>Dreamcast
Same as PC
>GCN
Same as PSX

RE3
Not many differences between versions, so I'll list them
>PSX (version on PSN)
>PC
>Dreamcast
>GCN

CODE:Veronica
>Dreamcast
The original release lacks a couple cutscenes and both Chris and Steve have slightly different hair.
>PS2 and GCN
Essentially the same release, but GCN is on two discs. This is based on the Japanese exclusive Kanzenban release of CV, retitled CODE:Veronica X when ported to PS2 and GCN. Adds the talked about cutscenes and hair changes.
>PS3 and 360
Digital only on our side, upgrades the lighting effects for more realistic lighting and add emphasis to using stuff like the lighter.
>PS4
Emulation of the PS2 release.

From here, most releases are fine.

One thing these threads forgot to mention which is pretty important to avoid wasting a ton of time:
If you're going to emulate, make sure you ONLY get single disc versions. For example the PS1 versions have two discs of RE2, for Leon and Claire separately. Problem is emulators consider these separate games and are a HUGE BITCH to try and get it to recognise card data for each other. This means you'll wind up ONLY ABLE TO PLAY ABOUT A THIRD OF THE GAME unless you go forward enough in terms of releases to get single disc. Dreamcast was a pain to get setup while GC is piss easy with Dolphin (make sure it's 5.0 or older) with a single disc version.
Thinking about it, I think only RE2 has split discs though.

Resi 2 remake is the essential experience, with modern controls. It's the best of the series and a good starting point.
