That's not true at all though, games deliberately remove or reduce the impact or requirements in having to communicate with other players, because most people default to doing everything through discord. You have to go out of your way to meet or interact with people in most games. And even then, you have to hope they're not just on discord and are willing to talk too.

I quit OSRS for this very reason. Played for almost 3 years and never made a single friend, never chatted with anyone. /osg/ are fags. Made a bunch of games in a /vg/ clan discord for a gacha game instead which was peak comfy but the game was shit so I quit that too and now I'm alone again

Setting up an IRC client used to be a pleb filter. Not every retard could be fucked to put in the effort. On the other hand, Discord is plug an play, the entry barrier is non-existent.

No, back in your day you had irc, vent, and teamspeak which were all slightly more difficult to get into than discord is now. It's a shit program but the ease of use (and alternatives like ripcord that are much more secure) mean there's no reason to not use voice chat.
You literally drag down every group you're ever in if you use text instead of voice. Period.

i've recently been playing barotrauma and it emulates old lobbies pretty well. there's ingame voip with people getting quieter the further away they are and muffling behind walls, so people actually talk to eachother since communication is a part of the game. like old times.
