Correct, it's a game of chicken. Price is going to be the most important thing for non-fanboys with launch games being second. Sony has the Asian market on lock and large fanboy group in the west. They figure it won't matter how long they delay, they'll outsell worldwide with ease.

I still want to know what Microsoft means by backward comapitble. If they mean I can throw my original Xbox games in and it'll play, fantastic. If they mean I have to buy that shit again and get shitty emulation, then backward compatibility means jack shit to me.

It's the exact same as how it works on Xbone. As long as it's on the backwards compatible list, you can put the disc in and play the game.
The OG Xbox list is unfortunately very tiny and missing a ton of exclusives. The 360 list has several hundred games though.

On December they announced Hellblade 2 and month later they announced another Ninja Theory game.

The advantage is that even if your disc is scratched to hell and back, as long as the header/hash signature is ok then it will run flawlessly

Xbox 360 was actually doing kinda well/finding a niche in Japan at the start not unlike the Sega Saturn. It even got Japanese exclusives like Blue Dragon, Radiant Silvergun Idolmaster arcade, and even some VNs like Steins;Gate

Then MS kinda did what Sony is doing now, got freaked out over anime stuff and pulled the plug on a lot of games, which doomed the system

People have less of a problem with those games taking a long time to come out, and more them just showing them over and over again. Either stop showing them after the first time, wait to show them later, or make the continued trailers a smaller part of the show. Sony had no shortage of third party games they could have been showing off during those conferences that they just ignored in favour of the same cinematic horseshit year after year.
