I can't understand this, some games certainly benefit from not having game overs, but lives are a pretty fantastic system in most platformers and stuff, it ensures that you actually get good at the level instead of just brute forcing things until you get lucky and win, like if you were having trouble getting to the checkpoint with any more than 1 life left, that will incentivize you to get better at the first half of the level, so then you can reach the checkpoint with all or most of your lives remaining, thus giving you a better shot at learning the second half of the level. You get directly rewarded for improving at the game.
