There's nothing wrong with cartoony characters, I like them, I love Banjo, But Banjo had like 15 years of nonstop requests, Crash only amped up after Banjo got in. I've been following this shit since the ballot, the front runners were characters like Ridlely, K. Rool, Geno, Banjo and a few others. Crash was fucking nowhere to be seen, even Rayman had more of an outcry. Shit, fucking SHANTAE made more waves than both of them.
It's annoying as fuck to see it because it screams bandwagon since no one gave a shit about Crash until a huge amount of the competition was either deconfirmed or put in the game, he was nobodies first choice at any point.

There were multiple western characters people were asking for before Crash though. Even when you try to use the western thing as a talking point, Crash was still behind a number of other characters in terms of requests.

No they don't, not in the slightest. Diddy's Popgun is a charge move that's basically useless in neutral and needs a near full charge to hit someone across the screen, you can also hold it to make it explode.
Banjo's egg is actually much closer to Mario's fireball in it's poking application, but the stance change when you hold B is unique to him and leads into combos and is generally very annoying. He can also run around and do 3 jumps while still firing which is also unique to him.

Smash is pretty full on platformers, there's not many that can bring something new to the table. I'd say an indie (Hollow Knight, Shantae, Shovel Knight, Quote. Cuphead) would be a good fit, I'm biased toward Shantae though.
