Fighters and warriors are awful but berserkers are usually based

Depends on the game and individual character, and whether you include class variations like Pirates or Brigands, but yes there are good ones all over.

Statistically speaking Johalva is a more reliable combat unit than Johan particularly since you get the Brave Axe the very map you recuit him. His only drawback is being a footsoldier, but unlike Johan he actually pulls his weight in combat.

Pretty much every fighter is based. Othin, Havan, Dagda, and even Marty if you get to promote him.

Both Geese and Gonzales are pretty good. Granted, not explicitly fighters, but still

Hawkeye and HHM Geitz are both monstrous units, with HHM Geitz doubling as one of the best archers in the game. Dart would be great if you didn't get him right before Geitz or if a Hero Raven promoted at level 10 wasn't faster with a hand axe than Dart as a 20/1 Berserker.

Garcia has ridiculous bases and can be good the whole game, specially if gone through Hero. Ross as a pirate -> berserker is also really good and Ross comes early enough for it to be viable without grinding

Boyd is pretty decent, as is the berserker you get halfway through. Largo IIRC.

Noland is notorious for being one of the few non-shitters of the downs brigade. Also Boyd again.

Among the best options for the avatar is to spend most of the game as a Berserker, although reclassing makes using him effectively on the harder difficulty all over the place.

Vaike is ridiculously underrated. Hero Vaike is actually very functional in a no-grind Lunatic run and Brigand Vaike is one of the better gen 1 units.

>Fates
Arthur is also an underrated unit. He's tanky and strong, can be a functional backpack and a crit machine on promotion. If paired with Beruka or Effie he's a better tank than either of them

You can definetly make Charlotte use. Her biggest issue is not joining late, but rather joining at level 10 with lower stats than the cast at that point. Had she joined level 15 with adequate stats she'd be much more attractive.

You'd be stupid not to make at least the archers into fighters in Three Houses.
Overall I think I used them as pair-up backpacks in Fates, but I think I benched Vaike since I don't really remember who I paired him with.

Newbie mistake. Just because two units are in the same class and the other does it better means that the other is subpar. Havan is still one of your most reliable units and not running him indoors because you "have too many axes" is stupid.

He's the only unit in the game to consistently get 20 Bld so he has that going for him, which allows him to cancel out any speed penalties on him early on in the game. Did you know most early enemies work on negative speed? I'll grant you he's a gimmick, but he's more functional than you think.

Geese is solid, actually. If you're not playing in Hard Mode where enemy stats are silly inflated he's very good, but very few things are even functional in FE6 hard mode and what is functional usually is found as an enemy and received the enemy buffs by accident. Hard Mode bonuses Gonzales is actually very good, the problem is that you only get 2 Hero Crests and people rather not use him because of that.

Vaike is one of the better Gen 1 units. Few people even play Awakening, they only pair Chrom and Avatar and skip turns, so I understand you don't know much about it.

Look their stats up, they're virtually the same. Havan has more base Str, Def and Bld. Othin has more base Skl and Spd. Both are like 5% growths apart from each other.

The big difference, in my opinion, was that if Othin misses on the enemy phase he loses his entire gimmick. Havan doesn't has an enemy phase, which can get pretty bonkers with a Killer Axe or the Brave Axe because he has a PCC of fucking 4. Sleep on Dagda or Ralph if you want, but never on Havan.

Calling him "subpar" is unfair to the actual subpar units. He's just bad. He can do some minor stuff in chapters 1-3 but when you get your team back he's never worth deploying. Vantage is basically worthless. Othin can crit twice from 1-2 range, halvan is stuck with shitty hand axes. Not even close to comparable.
Dagda, Xavier, and even Ralph are much better axe units.

20 bld isn't even desirable since it just means you can't rescue him ever. He starts with zero speed and has awful speed growth so he won't be doubling even 0AS enemies for a long time. Even if you go through all the effort of training him he can't kill bosses on thrones. He won't even match up to Dagda because he doesn't have charge or 7 movement. He's just bad.
On the other hand Dalshin gets a pass because he helps out in Manster.

Geese's stats are just awful in HM, HM Gonzales is almost workable but axes are too inaccurate so he ends up contributing nothing and making your tactics less reliable.

Pairing up chrom and avatar is a better strategy (better yet, add in Morgan and Lucina). Choosing to deploy Vaike or some other garbage unit makes you spend more effort and make more turns in order to keep him alive. Therefore he's bad.

Good pair up stats, bad stand alone unit. Being "risky" is worse than not being risky. Pretty simple.
