What went wrong with the Wii U?

They called it the Wii U
They doubled down on the Nintendo DS's titular gimmick without realizing it doesn't work at all on with a home console
literally nothing.
The marketing and name. Most people thought it was an add-on.
The library was abysmal and one of Nintendo's worst. They somehow managed to make a library worse than the N64, ceding the crown.
Literally just the name.
The fact that it focused on new games instead of constant ports, and aimed for 60 FPS, made it better conceptually than the Switch. Not to mention we still had the 3DS. Then Nintendo fell for the "hybrid" meme and ended up making half as many games. Way to go you dumb fanboys who were begging for the 3DS to die because "NOOO THESE GAMES SHOULD BE ON SWITCH!!!!".
>The fact that it focused on new games instead of constant ports
you mean the rehashes?
the gamepad kinda sucked and was mandatory, and also tied to the console so it wasn't actually portable.
the name/marketing was bad. a chunk of normal people thought it was a controller addon for wii.
Bingo. My sister, who played games for decades but stopped when she became a mom, thought it was an add-on for the Wii
It wasn’t that bad, they just marketed it terribly. The Switch isn’t really any better, they just marketed it right
>It wasn’t that bad,
It was, thanks to its miserable library.
This isn't the problem because it absolutely worked. The main problems were
>presentation
>marketing
>games library
anyone who owns a Wii U can tell you that it's a fun little system.
>What went wrong with the Wii U?
Nothing. Best console of this generation.
>The Switch isn’t really any better,
It is, though. The Switch's gimmick is literally the Wii U's gimmick but better.
What was the exchange between these two?
The system was underpowered and the gimmick was stupid. Seriously why tease a tablet game system and then make it only local wireless? This thing would have sold like hotcakes if it just used the Switch gimmick to begin with.
I meant it wasn’t bad as a system. The game library was crap because Nintendo marketed it terribly, meaning nobody wanted to buy it meaning nobody wanted to dev for it
a bad library is what really defines a system as bad.
shitch doesn't have any gimmics. Its outdated nvidia tablet with pair of worst controllers ever made.
E3 2011 was probably the most shitposting I've ever seen on Yas Forums
everyone immediately knew this thing was dead on arrival
I loved how the trash gamepad turned on and distracted you even when using a Pro Controller.
Also fun fact, check your gamepad’s battery life now, Nintendo must have used the lowest quality chink shit in the entire world, i can get 2 hours of battery at best before it dies and i barely used my Wii U, i played most of it’s exclusives once so i doubt i clocked more than 400 hours on the thing.
I fundamental naming issue, that I think was never properly addressed. Nintendo assuming the average mong would "just get it" instead of doing a very aggressive campaign to clearly explain it to everyone.
Then the severe lack of games really cemented it.
That's why anomaly successes like the Wii are dangerous for big companies, because it always turns them retarded until they get humbled by the subsequent failure.
It defines a platform as bad, but not the system itself.
Yeah, the same library that is praised in the switch, because you know, they practically have the same games.
1. The Wii fucking sucked so badly it pushed away gamers like me and left the casual audience
2. The WiiU tried to repeat the Wii success, but this time the gamers moved on to other platforms.
3. The WiiU absolutely failed to capture the Casual audience again
Thank God the switch Reignited my love for Nintendo I thought they were going to be shit casual fucks the rest of their life.
The first year drought fucking sucked. Literally nothing to play. They also fucked up on a golden opportunity during the holiday period. Instead of releasing a bundle with Mario 3D World, they push out a bundle with New Super Mario Bros, a year old ass game. They should have taken a page from SEGA back when they had aggresive and effective marketing campaigns.
>anyone who owns a Wii U can tell you that it's a fun little system
Hell no. I dread turning that piece of shit on and I'm glad that little by little its library is being ported put to make it a completely irrelevant system.
No, it didn't work.
The problem with the Wii U was the gamepad took away from gameplay and forced players to look back and forth between two screens and the gamepad made up most of the cost of production so instead of having better hardware it was an xbox 360 with a tablet.
If Nintendo had made the Super Wii, a next gen console more powerful than the PS4 and also used the Wiimotes it would have sold like hotcakes and probably would have been Nintendo's best selling system.
>its library is being ported put to make it a completely irrelevant system
Based imbecile.
>1. The Wii fucking sucked so badly it pushed away gamers like me and left the casual audience
a common delusion but it just goes to show you didn't pay close enough attention to the library. The Wii is Nintendo's last good system because Nintendo convinced every third party they had an audience this time.
Yeah its crazy how snoybois have revised history and make it seem like they were always being bullied.
Maybe if the technology wasn't a decade old developers would want to work with it instead of having to rely on in-house jobbers?
Just a thought.
What's the benefit of early adopting, anyway? Who is buying this technical jank?
They release a shit console nobody wants to develop for, and kill its production because of low sales, and then do the exact same thing again. Nintendo is quite literally kept alive by this cycle that the market perpetuates by buying every other unit regardless of quality.
I hope the coronavirus kills everybody at Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo and their respective markets. You dumb niggers buy absolute trash at premiums while pretending you're getting good deals for mediocre bricks.
Like just fucking find a different hobby until the market evens out. It's a win-lose scenario right now, you pay for garbage and the corporations win by selling it in a pretty package with absolute minimal effort dedicated to the actual industry's advancement.
How cucked do you have to be to be so addicted to video games that you support any of the bullshit that has been going on for the entirety of the 21st century?
Escapism is a disease.
Hobby's aren't meant to be an escape, there's so much more to life than hiding from it and compensating by lying to yourself about the method of self-flagellation you incur.
>mfw my brother was excited for it and became a nintendy ever since
I will never understand what's his malfunction. Now he tries to rope me into paying for Switch online because he's a NEET jew.
the switch is just as shit as the wii u
it's just marketing and influencers telling retards what to think and showing things in a positive or negative light
The poor marketing, the gimmick not being accessible to non vidya people, the lack of enthusiast games and the high cost for how low powered it was.
I honestly only bought it for smash. Stayed for Splatoon though.
>the switch is just as shit as the wii u
It's worse. The Wii U had first party support. The Switch gets ports while we wait for first party support.
The only issues with the switch are first gen hardware defects and the signature severely under-powered nintendo special.
Make a Switch2, have it be atleast comparable with gen8 consoles, fix the joycons, and you're good.
>If Nintendo had made the Super Wii, a next gen console more powerful than the PS4 and also used the Wiimotes it would have sold like hotcakes and probably would have been Nintendo's best selling system.
What matters are the games, and the marketing. No one cares about this mismash of concepts for a console if there´s not at least one of the two things.
The WiiU not only, on day one, had almost nothing in terms of games, but it also had a confusing brand marketing that killed all momentum.
The switch is the realization of what they wanted the Wii U to be.
You're the worst kind of retard.
The Wii had a better library than the Gamecube and the Switch combined. The Wii U was a great system and games like Wonderful 101 and Splatoon capitalized on the control scheme. The Switch is nothing but a port machine. It's nice to play games off the TV but the Wii U could somewhat do that and it doesn't make the Switch any better for it.
It´s all about marketing. The same could be said about the PS4/Xbone during it´s first year.
Most of Yas Forums wrote the wii off as just wagglan party shovelware, and didn't discover the library until Dolphin.
this. If it was called the Wii 2 it would've sold way more than it did.
What is the OP image referencing?
>The Wii had a better library than the Gamecube
maybe if you like children's games
It had a ton of good lightgun games.
The whole point is that you can play Gamecube games on the Wii.
I own a wii
theyre all braindead simple games including the gun games
Geoff remembered for a moment he was a """"""""""""journalist""""""""""", asked an actual question about the shitty state of the Wii-U and its lack of games, and reggie went into full DC.
>without realizing it doesn't work at all on with a home console
Nah, the dual screen worked fine. The problem was marketing.
It's the "PLAY. THE. GAME." gif. Geoff was basically like, "dude, you're not serious that this is THE new Mario game, right? You've got something else down the road?" and Reggie just kept asking if he played it.
>The problem with the Wii U was the gamepad took away from gameplay and forced players to look back and forth between two screens
thats not a problem at all as most games used the pad for inventory management or maps and it was fucking fabulous to switch items per drag and drop in Wind Waker without pausing the game. The only game I remember that requires a constant back and forth is star fox and nobody likes that for a reason
everything else you mentions isn't relevant, people don't care about hardware until they are told to
I FUCKING FORGOT JAPAN GOT YAKUZA 1 & 2 HD ON THE WII U AND WE DIDN'T
FUUUUUCK
Wii U was just a horrible name. It sounds like an ambulance siren. Fitting the console was dead on arrival.
>Maybe if the technology wasn't a decade old developers would want to work with it instead of having to rely on in-house jobbers?
Nah, technology is absolutely irrelevant in that regard. The only thing that matters is popularity.
It offered quite a variety of solid first party titles and unique third party titles. It can play wii games and can be hacked similar to the wii. I don't know what everyone is so butthurt about. The Wii U was an awesome and very understood system.
The Wii U had a weird as marketing campaign throughout its entire life that they kept doubling down on instead of improving. Nearly all of them showcased a focus on families. There was that series of ads where they filmed families being invited to the Nintendo HQ to play video games. They talked about how great the games are and how it brings their family together, but it barely showcased the fucking games. The only one I found funny was the Christmas one where some kids tried to convince their parents to buy them a Wii U and tried to convince the dad with Bayonetta 2 with the implication that he would be sexually attracted to her.
This. The Wii was the system for casual gamers and was flooded with dozens of peripherals like the wii fit board. The name never made it clear that this was a brand new console and because the graphical quality wasn't that far removed from the Wii, the general public could easily assume the Wii U was merely the tablet controller itself and just an accessory for the Wii.
My friend unironically thought that. I can't be bothered to correct him.
Look at this reveal trailer and point out everything wrong.
Only Nintendo home console in history without an exclusive mainline Zelda game. Nothing for Metroid, nada, zip. A new Pikmin game was basically carrying the whole system. Even Smash was better on the 3DS. You know a Nintendo system is in dire straits when its FIRST party support is lacking.
fpbp
The Wii U was objectively better than the Switch in all but marketing and portability.
>tfw I actually bought one at launch
>remember the actual legit drought of games till late 2013
The one saving grace was Monster Hunter 3U
Shiggy having too much control.
I'm convinced he was the one who pushed for all the non-gaming gimmicks.
the wii u was much more revolutionary than the switch
>Only Nintendo home console in history without an exclusive mainline Zelda game
Good. BotW is trash anyway.
people who buy nintendo consoles are casuals though so the gimmicks are fine
>geoff grills reggie for lackluster smash showing
>geoff grills reggie for poor marketing with the nonspecific action hero gag
>geoff attacks nintendo for a lack of new IP, wasting Retro on DKCTF reiterates fan interest in something new
>reggie reads off script that wii fit sold well and this justifies that there's nothing good coming from nintendo
>geoff shits on the vitality sensor that never came out
>geoff asks reggie what do fans have to look forward to, reggie lists games that are already announced (tw101, game & wario, mario 3d world) and says "but that's just the first party perspective"
>geoff counters saying "I think we JUST have the first party perspective right now. Hopefully we get more third parties."
>geoff: what do you say to people who are chosing between a wii u, a ps4 and an xbox one?
>reggie: the reason to buy a wii U-
>geoff: are just nintendo games?
>reggie tripping over his words, getting visibly frustrated
>reggie: "the consumer wants great new experiences," proceeds to list Mario Kart and Smash Brothers
>reggie: PLAY. THE. GAME.
>geoff: I'd love to play smash brothers, it's not here.
>reggie: P-PLAY THE GAME
Frankly Reggie got embarrassed and embarrassed himself in every way he could. Total shit show and Geoff did a great job venting consumer frustrations with Nintendo at the time right to the big retard.
The Switch also has a family based marketing campaign. But instead of "Use this to bring the family together!" it's "Use this to get away from the stress of raising a family".
bullshit
Name one (1) game worth getting a Wii U for.
casuals who still like games though.
The Wii blinded Nintendo and they didn't quite understand why people loved it so much, so they just doubled down and made the mistake of "our system can do everything!" taking focus over the games. It's a pretty good case for an idea that wasn't properly tested and picked apart for flaws.
Except the Wii U wasn't shit. It just sold like shit.
>a gimmick that was already done with one of their previous systems (and DS/3DS did it better)
>lame TV remote gimmicks that maybe less than 5% of the user base used
>a social network they killed before the console's lifespan was over
The only benefit that came from first party Nintendo during this time was Mario Kart 8, Mario 3D Worlds, and maybe Pikmin. The rest was middling to garbage.
Fatal Frame 5.
With all the soul and consumer friendliness sucked right out of it.
Literally the worst game in the franchise and censored to shit.
Xenoblade X
Wonderful 101
Fatal Frame V
Devil's Third
Splatoon
Mario Cart 8
>shitting on tropical freeze
yeah, fuck that noise.
Name one (1) game worth getting a Switch for.
Hard Mode: No ports.
>shit offline mmo gameplay
>ported to everything
>worst fatal frame ever
>half baked moonman game, lost his touch
>outdated predecessor
>better on switch
name one (1) game worth owning a Wii U for.
Second best after FFIV.
Splatoon
Thread should have ended here.
The name confused people into thinking it was a tablet addon for the wii rather than a new console. Normalfags didnt understand and they were the wii's market. The core gaming market still bought it, all 800k of us to the normie millions. Fucking sucks that it failed because Ninty will never bring miiverse back and nothing has replaced it in years since.
My bad, I forgot about Tropical Freeze
Splatoon 2
>those great games don't count because of a 'future' system that now has those great games.
lol i hate Yas Forums seriously.
