If the story doesn't matter, why did they bother putting one in it? They literally could have done it like the original Doom. A text screen explains what is going on and you don't see another text screen until you finish the whole episode. But they didn't. The UAC in Nu-Doom is an alternate UAC, in a different world. Hell is near infinite and they invade multiple worlds and dimensions, like Argenta. It's very possible that the Hell in Doom 3 is even the same Hell as in the other games.

2016 has a parallel world of Argent D'nur already, it's hardly a reach to say there is a parallel Earth.
Regardless the Eternal previews basically confirmed it already, it outright states that the people of Earth are "your people" when talking to the two Argent D'Nurian characters, along with his original helmet appearing in a flashback. That's without even considering the artbook leak.
