This shits all over Half-Life.
>came out 4 months before
>soundtrack that actually stands out
>visuals way better
>interesting, alien atmosphere
>varied environments
>great guns
>fun enemies to fight
>coherent, original visual design
>no cutscenes
>whole game is one journey
>friendly npcs you can interact with
I'll never understand why it got overshadowed by HL.
This shits all over Half-Life
Only bad thing I have to say about Unreal is, that the enemies are sometimes a little too bullet spongy. Other than that it's a 9/10 game.
It had so much potential, shame it was surpassed by quake 2 for multiplayer.
> multiplayer
He is talking about just "Unreal", not about UT.
>great guns
>fun enemies to fight
These two are wrong, and are why Unreal is inferior to Half-Life. The Skaarj are pretty intense to fight but most of the other enemies are kind of bland. The Dispersion Pistol is one of the worst starting weapons of any 90s fps.
Original unreal had a multiplayer
It also had great co-op too, with as many players as the server could handle.
The only good weapons were the flak cannon, the asmd and the rocket launcher
So what? Who cares about multiplayer in unreal or hl?
What the fuck is Epic wasting their money on that they can't use their Fortnite bucks to make a remake or at least a continuation of this game?
Unreal is quake on a different engine
Half-Life isn't quake, is original, on the same engine
Now fuck off autist
Unreal wanted to surpass quake, it succeded for singleplayer but failed for multiplayer
Epic have become slaves to their own cash cow.
They've gotta keep developing Fortnite or the squeakers will stop giving them money.
The game was unironically too long for it's own good. I liked it, but I had to really force myself to finish the last few stages
I mean they even froze the new UT which would have practically been made free by the fans
The unreal engine was a technical marvel when it released, could render huge maps that quake 2 could only dream of and had a solid software renderer.
>female protagonist
Nope from me.
Unreal is a good singleplayer shooter. UT is the best multiplayer shooter in 90s.
I got this for free on GOG and I couldn't bother to finish the first level. It was clearly made at a time when big open spaces had just become technologically available and so they couldn't help but overuse it.
UT is slow as shit with bad, gimmicky weapons and bad game modes.
What I love most about Unreal and the game using it's engine was the Alexander Brandon music desu
are you trolling?
>shock rifle and sniper fire across maps and sudden flak ricochet around corners
>slow as shit
Relative to what?
>replaying U1 again
>thread pops up
nice
Not the same guy, but the canonical Prisoner 849 character of Unreal is a female.
>This shits all over Starcraft
>came out 11 months before
>soundtrack that actually stands out
>visuals way better
>interesting, alien atmosphere
>varied environments
>great units
>fun units to use
>coherent, original visual design
>no cutscenes
>whole game is better overall
>friendly community you can interact with
>I'll never understand why it got overshadowed by SC.
Not claiming your wrong but this shit happens all the time in gaming
As I said, gimmicky weapons. There's only 3 FPS weapons worth having in a game, a shotgun, rocket launcher, and a railgun. Everything else is a gimmick.
>Relative to what?
Relative to bhopping at 600 units a second.
the lighting was pretty trippy
How come it has better texture detail and level geometry than half life, yet doesn't hold up compared to it?
Confirmed for tourist that doesn't actually play fps's
Your definition of gimmick sucks my guy.
> railgun
Yea, that railgun in ut was so cool.
Unreal has a campaign?
to be fair, its openGL with other fancy stuff
There's a distinctive look to colored lights in unreal engine.
I never played UT, but that pic makes me nostalgic because I played a shit ton of Rune as a kid.
lol
it shat itself
>Rune
I remember seeing the box at Fry's, perpetually on discount, but we never got it. Still haven't played it
and thus they made sure I'll never have a reason to install their shitstore
It's a pretty good game.
Just a solid action adventure game with cool levels and art direction. A no bullshit good game. Multiplayer was also pretty cool.
Isn't the main trio supposed to be Rocket Launcher, Railgun, and Lightning Gun?
Sssshhhh he's pretending he's a hardcore quakefag.
I'm still pissed ut4 got canned
Fuck epic
>Unreal is Quake
How can somebody be this wrong?
Why is the lightning gun a staple anyway?
I never liked the lightning gun, or hitscan tracing weapons in general, including machine guns. It just feels like shit. No impact, no anything.
Weapons that don't have a timing aspect to them are boring.
The survival mode against the monsters was so fucking fun. Fuck I wish I was 13 again.
Also just doing deathmatch against max bots and only using dual enforcers.
And I realize this is about Unreal not UT but I don't care.
It still looks great desu
Okay FPS lads, who would win in an all out bout between late 90's MC's? Prisoner 849, Gordon Freeman, or Quake Ranger.
It was shit anyway. Bad performance, bad mouse input, shitty design decisions everywhere.
Ranger because Quake 1 had the most OP weapons by far.
Are you actually retarded or pretending to be one?
I love both HL and Unreal and have since they released. But I'll give you some perspective on what separated them at the time.
Unreal is too fucking long. I know that sounds crazy but the whole experience starts to unravel after a while and since the quality of the maps mostly dips the further you get it leaves you feeling kind of glad when it finally ends. Unreal has a pretty bland expansion that doesn't live up to the best levels in the original. It's got some things that are better but overall it's more mediocre levels and few good ones. It does look significantly better than HL but in 98 only the hardest hardcore gamers could run it like that. It was a good 3-4 years before most of us even saw the bells and whistles it had.
Now I know what you're thinking. Half Life had Xen ruin the end and it drags in a couple of places. You're right. But the highs are better than Unreal and weren't just great shooter moments, they were things no shooter had ever done. It is a believable coherent world and one continuous journey too and has a strong attachment to reality (not realism). The expansions are almost all great and that includes stuff like TF1. It had a robust and high quality mod scene. Unreal doesn't have a They Hunger or Sven despite the better engine and tools.
It's overlooked and underrated but for 1998 I totally understand why it played out the way it did.
Unreal would be one of the best fpses if they kept the quad barrel shotgun.
>the quality of the maps mostly dips the further you get
What? Some of the best maps like Bluff Eversmoking and Na Pali Haven are quite deep into the game.
>It had a robust and high quality mod scene
The Unreal mod scene kinda mingles with the UT mod scene though, a lot of people who make stuff targeted at Unreal players create it for UT, to be run with Oldskool. And UT had one of the greatest mod scenes of all time.
Dasa pass and terraniux drag for way too long also the titan is far too redudant as boss
>game starts with character selection
>default is tough dude with trucker cap
Terraniux is a fairly early map. I agree that Mercenaries aren't too fun though. Didn't have a problem with Dasa.
