Everything looks like a smudge, plus the background is literally nothing.
The colors don't offset each other, the character has the same colors as the stage.
It has too much detail and little to no detail at the same time.

Just like every other game with such an artstyle, it's a western "imitation" of Cave Story's pixel art.

Plus the background, although simple, has enough detail to bring attention to the stage.
