Personally I think there are plenty of interesting Nintendo characters that are both important to their series and genuinely interesting. Three I can think of are:
>Dark Matter (Kirby)
>Porky (Mother, this one's a conundrum, not sure why he isn't at least a spirit)
>Fawful (Mario)
All of them are interesting characters that would bring to Smash what isn't already in there. One is a formless hivemind that would be a perfect contrast to the other Kirby characters, the next would focus on mech attacks and cool Giygas-looking shit, the last would be the perfect representative for the part of Mario that's sorely misrepresented in Smash, the RPGs.
Go ahead and attack my taste or whatever but I still think Smash should be Nintendo-centric with third party guest characters. It's obvious that every third party we get is gonna be another main protagonist of their game plus the first level as their stage or something. Nintendo reps offer more variety.

All of them are better fitted for poke-balls, trophies, spirits, stickers.
