Probably the latter. Gamestop is just not a needed brand. It needs to have serious incentive for people to want to shop there. As is they remove more and more games (because most people buy digital, or order online) and stuff their store shelves with toys and novelty merch. That's what used to sell but it obviously doesn't anymore. Instead of downsizing they're just shuttering stores entirely, and shipping everything to their warehouses to turn into an online store/distributor. That may be the best path for them going forward. Frankly I've never had an issue from gamestop's online shipping like I have with amazon. Never get scratches on my shit, or delays.

Brought about the era of retailer exclusive preorder bonuses. Proceeded to fuck up pre orders of people who went there, occasionally you get a person doing actually malicious stuff like canceling your preorder pocketing the refund, not telling you it's actually selling for less than you paid for it, selling used games as new, opening new games to sell them as used, pushing frustrating upsells like game informer subs and paid cards instead of just selling games.

It's funny because I've never had an issue with Amazon but I've had delays from gamespot

Hopefully Gamestop goes the way of Gaming Cafe/Store. I believe a business model like that could appeal to kids who simply don't have the money to spend on a $60 game and adults who don't have the time to spend on a 40 hour game

Most importantly, PCs that play anything that people generally want to play are cheap enough that you could justify getting one for all the other benefits in the west. The east, GPUs are still around ~1k USD new so it's not a horrible financial decision to go to some place for $1/hr that has 9900k and 2080 sli setups, and also gives you double xp in mmos, tons of other benefits in games and shit.

VR is such an investment for consumers, I would go to a game stop and spend like 10 bucks per hour just to try it out. If I like it I buy a set and a steam code for whatever I was playing that I liked.

Start making deals with digital game publishers/devs to become a physical publisher for them and be the only ones selling them. Low level companies like SRG and LRG won't be able to compete with them and this is how you fix not having physical copies of games to sell - make them yourself.

They even get into bed with the big three regularly so they could probably even work out deals to get the physical copies cheaper or in better quantities compared to the others.

Why they didn't immediately do this as digital rose is baffling to me.

I've visited at least 3 different GameStops in my area recently. I haven't been offered a single preorder or had an otherwise bad experience. They've been good places to pick up older games (PS3, Wii, Wii U, DS, 3DSand even PS4 games a few years old) on the cheap, even compared to Amazon sometimes with their used deals. Just goes to show that they aren't all the same. There may be a way to turn it around especially if they embrace the retro and experiential market more. Maybe they can become a place to inexpensively experience VR as well?

They dipped their toes in the retro market recently, my local gamestops, the ones that survived the purge at least, all have SNES and N64 games now (or again, rather). It's pretty interesting.

That's actually a really good idea, you don't need to offer mass physical distribution in every WalMart, Bestbuy and Target in the world, just offer a scaled down form of that that's exclusive to Gamestops. Digital customers can still buy said games but Gamestop could just manufacture their own digital copies and promote the fuck out of their own library of indie gems that average customers would otherwise ignore.

All game stop needs is a reason for people to buy from them instead of others.
