You do trivial tasks like fishing, bug catching and digging, while having the company of virtual villagers and the ability to decorate your house.
The game is only where it is right now due to its atmosphere. Aesthetics, music, sound design, dialogue and character design all fit perfectly to make the most boring concept of a game into a comfortable experience.
But that's all it really is, a comfortable experience. It won't give you dopamine boosts like most fun games, but it will keep you engaged for half an hour everyday for presumably years, because to experience the game's content to its fullest you'll have to let some time pass before anything changes.

Well it's not out yet but old games had holiday events you could only participate in at a certain time of year, but you could just change the clock for them if you wanted. Apparently this time around they're making them DLC (hopefully free) so you can download them and do them when you want but more likely so people can't just get christmas and halloween stuff day 1

They will occur on their normal days, it's dlc because they might as well finish the parts of the game you don't have to wait months for and then add holidays as they come, also stops time travelers from spoiling how they work
