when i was younger, i remember most of the time picking the most outfield character in the roster in the eyes of my friends: i specifically remember choosing shit like dhalsim, going full screen and just spam the attack with the most range since my friend in question did not even know the basics such as that you can actually hit his limbs when they're all stretched out. another memory of mine is picking snake (who ended up being my real main in the series anyways) in brawl solely because no one in my circle could deal with his projectiles
if you're talking about the today me then i usually pick big bodies who have good buttons even in neutral and/or some rushdown characters too with not-shit health. i used to be a projectile zoner fiend but not anymore
oh and most important, i actually have to aesthetically like my character: if they're some annoying fuck then i won't pick them even if they perfectly fit my playstyle
