Why can't Yas Forums learn ASCII...

Why can't Yas Forums learn ASCII? The greatest games of all time like NetHack and Dwarf Fortress require ASCII to be played properly.
>b-but muh tilesets!
There are 1500 tiles on a nethack floor, 2000 minimum in Dwarf Fortress. This much data cannot be properly conveyed graphically and never will be. Every tileset looks like a meaningless clusterfuck.

You MUST learn ASCII.

>Greatest game
holy shit HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Lmao fuck that
Whats so taboo about having something visually appealing?

t. filtered

>f-filtered
Nethack is boring as fuck. Once you get through the UI through a cheat sheet, you'll notice that the game has no depth beyond muh secrets and muh wacky immersive interactions.
It's the "Dragon Quest" of roguelikes. It was revolutionary at the time and a worthy successor to Rogue, but now we have roguelikes that aren't JUST about dungeon-crawling.

DorfFort can be played perfectly fine with tilesets, you'd have to have actual brain damage to think otherwise

>now we have roguelikes that aren't JUST about dungeon-crawling.
NetHack is a nonlinear puzzle game that pushes orthogonal design to its absolute extremes built on top of a roguelike. Your ignorance only shows that you haven't gotten very far in it, if you played it at all. Nothing even comes close to it. You are probably referring to games like CDDA which aren't roguelikes at all and poorly designed disasters.
It does not. Dwarf Fortress looks like a complete mess with tilesets and only a retard would use one. The point of graphics is to convey information visually and if tilesets detract from this they are objectively worse than ASCII. Yas Forums cannot swallow this pill because they are casuals that mostly play cinematic movies games.

what the actual fuck is the appeal of these games

Good fucking job using an ancient tileset in a weak attempt to "prove" your point. Tileset support has come a long way since image you just posted.

are you ok retard

Nethack is one of the most tactically complex games ever created. The initial appeal is discovering all the unique interactions and areas, but once you get beyond that it becomes a game of consistently using an enormous toolset to make the right decisions. It's also one of the few non-porn games where you can be trapped in a room and raped repeatedly until you starve to death.

Dwarf Fortress is an autistic simulation game for testing how well your computer can handle calculating 300 cats trying to optimally path through a doorway.

seethe
There is no tileset where the information of 2000 tiles can ascertained at a glance. The more natural something looks, the easier it is to blend together.

that pic looks like a video game, op pic looks like keyboard spam

Reminder that ASCII was ALWAYS a placeholder for actual graphics in DF

you have to go back to your containment general
noone here is autistic enough for nethack, which is one of the worst roguelikes there exists, second to rogue

>y-you're just autistic
I didn't realize Yas Forums was normalfag central now.
Imagine a game where your pet cat gets turned to stone by a cockatrice, so you pick up its statue and carry it around the whole game until you find a stone to flesh spell, cast it, then take the cat to the nearest shop and teach it to shoplift.

^assburgers AND a newfag

Reminder that this is just normalfag cope and that ASCII will always be the definitive way to play the game. Tilesets always were and always will be training wheels.

ASCII is fine for roguelikes where there are a limited number of tile elements in a relatively empty maze. There is no visual confusion because the screen only has as much on it as is necessary, leaving the important things readily identifiable among otherwise blank space.

ASCII is not fine for DF where every single tile on the screen has something on it at all times, and 256 characters are not enough to convey the thousands of elements in the game so there is a dependency on colors as well. It's too much visual noise, and no one tile stands out from any other because of the lack of blank space, forcing you to constantly process and interpret the individual characters instead of simply knowing what is on screen at a glance.

You can also cast stone to flesh on rocks to make meatballs.

can I cast stone to flesh on a statue and fuk it

>ASCII will always be the definitive way to play the game
According to whom

>256 characters are not enough to convey the thousands of elements in the game
They are though. I use the same neural pathways to associate a white colored "f" with cat as I do to associate a picture of a cat with cat. It's like learning a second language, except it's much more difficult to confuse an "f" with a "d" than it is to confuse two tiny pictures of brown colored quadrupeds.

No but if the statue is an incubus it might pull down your pants and fuck you.

Me, the video game king.

>It's like learning a second language
That's not a great way to market your game as fun and enjoyable.

>will spend years learning japanese to play porn games
>will not spend 2 hours to learn ASCII to play the greatest video games of all time
Explain yourself.

>market your game
Nigga these games are free.

I don't need to "learn ASCII" to play DF when there are graphical tilesets that do a much better job of conveying what the fuck is actually on my screen.

>do a much better job
They don't though. We already discussed this.

Fuck ASCII
Unicode for life

Pure unicode is bad because it causes font problems and other various inconsistencies that come along with trying to include every glyph ever conceived by man.

I like the concept of dwarf fort and I’m in to autistic games enough that I know I’d probably enjoy it once i got the hang of it. But Holy shit, it’s fan base seems like a bunch of cunts. All you faggots talk about is is fucking ASCII in DF threads to the point that I still don’t even really know what the gameplay is like. You pretentious fucks just like telling yourself you’re superior for playing a complex and objectively ugly game.

You can get to the supermarket in a wheelchair, but you'd be much better off using your legs if you are able.

I didn't vote for you

>shutposting on Yas Forums
Imagine that

user, Dwarf Fortress is a casual simulation "game." It takes 5 minutes to learn. They seem like cunts because you are mentally disabled. The fact that spending 5 minutes of not knowing what do sends you into a state of disgust says a lot about you. Why would the "fan base" want a complete retard that needs to be spoonfed everything in their midst? If experimenting with the unknown isn't appealing, then it probably won't appeal to you anyways.

I mean, at this point we have slow paced 30 minute long DF tutorials with hand drawn pictures and soothing ASMR style narration with constant reassurances to help combat normalfags from panicking. If this amount of handholding isn't enough for you I really don't know what to say. Nobody wants to change your diaper.

You don't vote for kings, faggot.

Cant tell where you are in that mess. Did you edit this to not have a player @?

Holy shit way to not actually read my post and only confirm what I was saying. I wasn’t saying that the UI or complexity turn me off. I have fucking 400 hours KSP so no, complex and hard to learn games don’t scare me off. I was making the point that the games fanbase is full of a bunch of autistic sperg lords which you just confirmed for me. Fucking retard.

user... KSP is a normie game and not complex at all.

That is objectively untrue.

open your eyes filthy casual

>55k reviews on steam
bro, its a game to make normalfags feel smart. are you really this dumb

Tiles can be pretty nice in some games.

Attached: 20200308093216_1.jpg (2560x1440, 523.76K)

You are just rationalizing. The only reason DF is in ASCII is because the author of the game considered this the best option to dedicate himself to the factors he found most important without having to waste time on graphics, animations, etc.
And you are a retard if you think that information translated into letters of different colors is actually simpler for the brain than images of objects.

I prefer without the color filter tho

Qud is pretty bad in that you can run through the woods and not even notice you are getting hit by shit. That being said it uses enemy colors in the same way nethack does, just with very abstract tiles instead of ascii. It's also a terrible game, basically the roguelike version of skyrim.

>It's also a terrible game, basically the roguelike version of skyrim
oh, so it's fun.

>dedicate himself to the factors he found most important without having to waste time on graphics, animations, etc.
Yeah because graphics aren't compatible with those factors.

No its trivial, full of glitches, and 95% of the game is shallow filler.

isn't in development since 2007 though?
how can it be shallow?

The devs are retarded hacks more concerned with putting trannies in the game.

Wait, are there really trannies in the game?

Yas Forums can cope all they want, but the fact of the matter is that nethack can and is played by the blind. Blind people cannot even use Yas Forums properly. ASCII reigns supreme for conveying information.

Yes.

>There are 1500 tiles on a nethack floor, 2000 minimum in Dwarf Fortress. This much data cannot be properly conveyed graphically and never will be
Then how do you display it with 256 character?
Face it ASCII games should be using Kanji or Simplified Chinese characters.

thegreatestgameyouwilleverplay.com/

ASCII mods for pc that are guaranteed to impress your players. Why play NetHack if you can play Starbound? They have 4D pixel art. I suppose you're either using mongodb or your 3D graphics card to do that, but I digress.
Some programmers found the existence of ASCII code so remarkable that they created corresponding codes. Plus even better, they can be read by bad-meaning-yes-but-actually-bad kids. Just point them at the stat-gain man's ASCII-leauge and go have a blast. (Local flea markets ect) And a fine mechanism for generating ASCII numbers that are guaranteed to impress players, you don't need the CD, the floppy disk or notepad to add something as special as that. So, what are you waiting for? Start learning ASCII

i ascended in nethack and i've still never seen anything this bad
it does get pretty hectic once you're in the planes and the astral plane is a pure clusterfuck, but that's what ring of conflict is for

Who do you think you are, War?
