At least Geno, Rayman and Saki have more of a chance for something than post launch spirits like Akira and Leon cause those were right before FP2.

Not only does it mean more for something to happen officially, but most Brawl/PM character mods aren't as polished as official characters. Plus it gives them a chance at official remixes too.
Rivals of Aether workshop is the easiest tool for custom Smash characters, but most of them go unfinished.
Plus there's not always gonna be a full character for one you want, I don't think anyone's made a Saki, Doomguy or Fulgore yet.

I don't get why people claim that Sakurai saying this doesn't mean shit in the grand scheme of things. On what planet does the director acknowledging a character's existence not change things up a bit?
This reminds me about the debate on "slots". Sure other characters (who are major characters and/or come from relevant franchises) have better chances but it's not like they are absolutely guaranteed to get in over Geno if the decision really came down to it because it all depends on how much 3rd party developers are willing to negotiate. Sure, I can picture someone like Rayman (which I vastly prefer by the way) or Crash getting in over Geno but what if Sakurai simply doesn't personally like them as much as Geno? What if Square had a change of heart and was willing to give up the character they clearly have no use for? There's no sense in trying to make sense of Smash's development. Who would have ever thought that Ridley would get in after Sakurai breathlessly insisted that he would be too large to work with as a fighter? Hell, who would have ever imagined that a generic mook would get in, even as a joke character, when Nintendo already has tons of out-there choices that are at least actual characters.
