I feel you need at least somewhat reliable bike. I did go down from some local skiing place once years ago. Mostly braking whole time because that shit is fucking fast. Get flat tire and it's walk from there.
Have some shitty thrift store "dirt bike" now. It's fine. Not good for long things. And the brakes are non existant.

Of course your bike should work and not be shit. But you realy don't need expensive bike for it. Butt if you want to try downhill, at least have good breaks. Your reaction and split seconds and if your breaks fail, there is nothing you can do. I don't even wear helmet but if you have one, why not use it. Doesn't matter how expensive your bike is. Flat tire doesn't care about prize. I put patches on it all the time. It is not bad idea to have another one in backpack. I ride bmx since i was kid. It is all about your skills realy and right size of bike.

You only need suspension on fork, working breaks and mountain tires. Amateurs don't need to spend too much on bike because they will have to go slower anyway.
