While VN's are not really games... I'm certain there's been an influx of dark elves in japanese pop culture in recent years. For example, Youkoso! Sukebe Elf no Mori e is absurdly based in dark elf content.
Perhaps this interest will translate to mainstream jrpg dark elves eventually?

The usual Pathfinder and D&D.
Warcraft 3 version of night elves (aka: xenophobic amazons), new ones suck though. Blood elves are fine (aristocratic and decadent).
I really don't like the Dragon Age version of them either being second class humans or gypsies with a forgotten past. I think those "setting twists" are really, really stupid and lame.
The Elder Scrolls ones aren't really my cup of tea but they are very, very interesting and very fleshed out. The Dunmer and Dwemer in particular are very interesting.
Any version of the "Our Elves are different" trope I dislike. Divinity 2 Original Sin, for example. Just call it something else because it's clearly not an elf.

If you only put dark elves in the game, they lose the appeal of "other" pretty quickly. I think you should go with somewhat generic setting which just happens to have lot of dark elves as a plot point. Something like: dark elf nation sends a group of diplomats to negotiate with a distant kingdom and pc is a human guard assigned to them. Stuff happens, maybe there's a revolt or a large magic cataclysm and you're separated from civilization, and need to travel through large areas on an adventure to reach something.

While he may not be totally wrong (many people probably are just after the sex scene and are thinking more about the body type than the personality of the race), they're not really doing anything to distance themselves from that approach.
You want a dwarf or qunari romance to be more than just about the shape of these people? Then fucking write it like that, you nitwit! It's like someone just sitting back and going "nope, can't be done. I want it to be about A, but some people want it to be about B - sure, I get to create the whole thing, but I can't risk it."
