>want to get into deus ex series
>decide to play the first one
>story spoilers in the intro
>game encourages me to avoid combat and sneak around despite the stealth mechanics being absolute shit
Is this another meme game I fell for like New Vegas?
Want to get into deus ex series
>>game encourages me to avoid combat and sneak around
No it doesn't. ONE FUCKING GUY tells you to do that. You are NEVER given ANY gameplay reason to do that.
I'm at the second level and so far every major NPC has told me something along the lines of finding an alternative route to avoid confrontation or sneaking behind enemies aside from the big german retard
>game encourages me to avoid combat and sneak around despite the stealth mechanics being absolute shit
Yeah I've never been a big fan of typical stealth gameplay, but at least you're given ways to take people out nonlethally from a distance with the crossbow tranqs. A little later on it's a lot better once you finally get a stealth aug, and there are some "hiding in plain sight" stealth sections that are fun. You can go full lethal combat though, you aren't capable of taking on so many people at once right away but eventually that becomes possible too. And other than some chiding from Paul and Carter there isn't much of a downside to it.
It's mostly about savescumming until you know guard routes. A lot of stealth games are like this sadly.
I feel like a good stealth game is one in which you have enough tools to contain a "oh shit I'm caught!" Clusterfuck that the player doesn't immediately feel the need to savescum. MGS is good at this, especially 5
Deus ex is that sort of game though. Combat is viable.
>story spoilers in the intro
Not only is combat viable, there's a lot of hidey holes and air vents and such to hide in once you get caught so you don't even have to become a killer once you get spotted.
combat is viable because enemy AI is completely retarded, playing into the "shit stealth mechanics" in the OP
He's not wrong. This is actually one thing the PS2 port improved.
I want to play Deus Ex this year, Any Good Source Ports like Doom or Duke?
Just get Kentie's Deus Exe, it fixes most of the basic problems
The spoilers ARE the story. It's the same as reading Benito Cereno; you know the whole time that slaves/MJ12 had taken over the ship/world government and that you're there awkwardly wondering how and when Delano/Denton is going to realize it himself, and when he does realize it shit goes south extremely quickly
It sounds like you're expecting a classic FPS. Don't, it's closer in spirit to Thief than Half Life.
>story spoilers in the intro
They are supposed to be super vague and weird, that's most people's first impressions. It's not until you reach halfway through the game that you realise "Oh shit, now the intro makes sense"
>game encourages me to avoid combat and sneak around despite the stealth mechanics being absolute shit
Yes, because the combat is even more shit when you're low level.
Combat doesn't get good until you're at Hong Kong, then you become a super-human fighting machine if you pick the right augs and weapons.
>Source Ports
>yet another brainlet who absolutely missed the point of the game
You are your choices. The game doesn't encourage you to do shit, it's the characters. Feel free to completely ignore them if you like. Go full rambo with heavy weapons/rifles and armor skills and weapon mods. Or go full riot cop, throwing tear gas 'nades at faggots and then whooping their asses with a riot prod or a telescopic baton. Or choose your own special playstyle, damn. And don't call deus ex a stealth game ever again, you fucking bogie.
>>story spoilers in the intro
okay tell me the story then
Then you're incapable of playing games if you haven't talked to Navarre and Gunther
You're unironically playing it wrong. The entire game is about challenging your assumptions and the world around you. If you just float around like an NPC and do whatever the first actual NPC tells you to do then ya, you're not gonna have a good time. Be the player and make decisions on your own, the most amazing part of Deus Ex is how the world reacts to everything you do.
Did you misread his post? Anna tells you to make a head-on attack on Castle Clinton while others tell you to look for a side entrance
>If you just float around like an NPC and do whatever the first actual NPC tells you to do then ya, you're not gonna have a good time.
retard
This is pretty much what Eidos took away from DX when making the nu-Ex games and it's fucking sad.
>so it's like, sneaky game that you cant' kill people in yeah?
>Game discourages combat
You can go full murder rampage very easily even if it's not immediately obvious how, many characters in the game will praise your brutality and there are even relatively obscure dialogues or mission paths for for killing most people you meet. Like killing Anna and the other guy in the plane.
I'm the same way, I like doing stealth and nonlethal routes when possible and that just feels like total shit in DE because the enemy AI is some of the most hilariously stupid I've ever seen, so the stealth is unsatisfying, uninteresting, and really not worth the effort.
>oh but dude you don't get it the whole point of DE is you can play however you want
And what if I want to play it like a stealth game instead of stacking boxes and GEP gun-ing doors to meme through everything? There's no fun in bypassing systems and sequence breaking if the initial systems aren't good in the first place.
The icing on the cake is that no matter what updated exe or renderer I use there's always some sort of bug, whether it's the lighting being fucked or the menus taking an eternity to load presumably just because of win10 or nvidia or some other shit disagreeing with it.
aaaand another zoomer got filtered, so satisfying to see
>>game encourages me to avoid combat
No, it doesn't. This isn't Human Revolution/Mankind Divided where you get 3 times as much XP for playing stealthily. In Deus Ex 1 you get the same amount of skill points regardless of your playstyle.
>It sounds like you're expecting a classic FPS. Don't, it's closer in spirit to Thief than Half Life.
Half-Life wishes it could even be remotely as fun as Deus Ex.
Don't bother will stealth, play it as a first person shooter, the levels are not designed around a stealth playstyle. Enemies and patrol routes are placed at complete random with zero thought put into how a stealth orientated player would sneak through. I personally went exclusively melee when I acquired the laser sword in Hong Kong, carried me through the entire game, although you'll still need EMP grenades / rockets to deal with awkwardly placed robots.
>the levels are not designed around a stealth playstyle. Enemies and patrol routes are placed at complete random with zero thought put into how a stealth orientated player would sneak through.
>spotted the zoomer
Deus Ex supports stealth better than most dedicated stealth games, because of how open and non-linear the levels are.
>can't even quote properly
>says some retarded shit
>expects anyone to believe him
Yes, explain to me how to shut down the generator in the Hell Kitchen's warehouse without anyone ever seeing you, knocking people unconscious is allowed. The three levels of walkways above the generator all have guards patrolling the walkway in a square pattern with a stationary guard tucked away beneath the staircase never moving, just standing still. The guards underneath the staircases are IMPOSSIBLE to knock unconscious without triggering an alert, you CANNOT get the drop on them. Many levels are like this you low IQ faggot.
>types in a password despite not getting it in the video
>underground route requires a very specific set of tools, weapons and skills to pass through
Oh wow, an autist savant at Deus Ex who knows the game like the back of his hand know exactly what items and weapons to supply himself with before taking the route was able to do it? Conveniently, because he already played the game he knew the username / password and didn't have to venture into bullshit placed enemy territory to obtain said username / password. How dishonest.
>>types in a password despite not getting it in the video
>what is hacking, allowing you to hack computers without the need for a password
>underground route requires a very specific set of tools, weapons and skills to pass through
Yeah no shit, it's almost like it's an RPG where your character build matters.
You really are a clueless moron.
just wait until you get your chinese lightsaber and then kill every enemy, even bosses, with one hit. it's great. also just use your tranquilizer dart it's really cool to sneak around and make them all fall unconscious
>makes a false claim
>gets utterly BTFO
>n-no, that doesn't count
cope harder
>Yes, explain to me how to shut down the generator in the Hell Kitchen's warehouse without anyone ever seeing you
Just open the door on the bottom floor and throw a fucking LAM at it, you don't even need to enter the building
What an embarrassing question
>"Where's the quest compass nooooo daddy save meeee!"
'k
>game encourages me to avoid combat
u wot
This plague...
>>game encourages me to avoid combat
I'm sure he meant the dialogue you get from Paul, being cops n shit.
>the levels are not designed around a stealth playstyle
I think you mean "the levels are not designed around a 100% ghost playstyle", It's very much a stealth game when you play on realistic cause you die so fast
But even ghosting the game is pretty fucking easy, you're just bad at it
I bet you didn't even play it with GMDX
That's a plot element though
>I'm sure he meant the dialogue you get from Paul, being cops n shit.
How does that amount to the game encouraging you to avoid combat? Are NPCs not allowed to have opinions?
Besides, major characters like Gunther, Anna and many of the Unatco soldiers disagree with Paul and advocate a guns blazing approach
The truth is the opposite of what this guy says. The game is more stealth oriented than combat oriented, because of how fast you can die. You can literally turn invisible you retard.
if you trigger an alarm, reload your last save.
If you don't, you're not playing the game correctly.
the whole point of the game is to sneak around.
Going out all guns blazing is only an option that's here for casuals like you.
You cant hack security consoles. Have you played the fucking game?
Stealth is absolute trash in Deus Ex. Significant downgrade from Thief in that regard.
>You cant hack security consoles
lol what? yes you can
Stealth run would be no kills whenever possible faggot.
>But even ghosting the game is pretty fucking easy, you're just bad at it
The levels are not designed around a stealth playstyle, your lies will get you nowhere.
Stealth breaks the game. Deus Ex wasn't designed too well for it. If you know how the AI works you can abuse the everliving fuck out of it.
When I bought the game I used to play stealth but every playthrough for the last decade has been realistic, full combat and no regeneration or cloaking augs.
No you cant.
>The levels are not designed around a stealth playstyle, your lies will get you nowhere.
I don't agree with that. Ocean Lab and the Freighter are pretty hard to ghost because of the tight quarters you're in but everything else is pretty straightforward.
Did I say you needed to kill anyone? You throw a LAM at the generator. The generator explodes and you're done
The levels are designed around a stealth playstyle, you're just bad at the game, saying something very easy is impossible
alternatively, enter from the second floor through the broken window, knock out the guy in that room, and throw a LAM or hack the console
Or enter from the very top and knock out all the guys from the top-down
>You cant hack security consoles. Have you played the fucking game?
zoom zoom
deusex.fandom.com
>An agent can hack ATMs, computers and security consoles.
>You cant hack security consoles.
?????
And it is mandatory the level is ended this way
youtu.be
Just for you I fired up the game, started a new game, levelled my hacking skill, ran to the security console outside the statue of liberty, and hacked it. What game did you play?
>Ocean Lab and the Freighter are pretty hard to ghost
Invisibilty aug
Blimey m8, that's enough 4channel for you today
