Because they were bored of making content solely for a younger audience and went full-on "we don't care" mode. All the other Rare games had echoes of more outlandish content (See: Banjo-Kazooie, Battletoads, Donkey Kong, Krystal's redesign, etc) but with this title, nothing was stopping them. I really love this game just because it's so organic and creator driven. It's pure soul. Never again.

The reason Berri never caught on if you ask me is because while her body is hot her face is really bad. In the first game it's understandable why her face is lackluster in the area of facial expressions. But in the remake? Berri's face is still blank with no emotion during the cut scenes. This was the gen when we were getting games like Kingdom Hearts or Ratchet and Clank so this did not impress anyone.

Look at Krystal who was also created by Rare, she only had a little bit of screen time and wore a two piece like Berri, but she had a lot of life in her face. She had fully animated facial expressions so that left a big impression.

The only way I can see Berri being salvaged is if they do another Conker game, where she's also alive, and DROP the stupid method of Conker cut scenes with the text bubble because that's part of the reason the facial animation in Conker is shit. They need to use the standard looking cut scenes that most games utilize.

Some artists remove tails for anthros. It's honestly part of the reason I hate Bojack Horseman I hate the way the anthros look and frankly the art style of that show is ugly.

It's pretty great that CBFD was a technically cutting edge game as well. IIRC it was the first game ever on the N64 to have multicolored lighting and non-blobby shadows. The audio design was a pretty neat feat of technical expertise as well.

The reason Conker was created the way that it turned out was because the general expectation was that it would be family friendly given Conker's an animal character.

Krystal caught on because she was more groundbreaking at the time. By the end of the 90s people were already quite acquainted to the cartoony sexy style and things are all very nice and routine. Yeah, Berri's nice and all, but we've seen it before, even with a more mature theme present. Then Krystal falls out of nowhere, and is an unironic fantasy style furry and this is like a nuclear bomb being dropped at the time. And Berri and Krystal are created by literally the same person as well, so it's not like this is a competition.

Let's see we keep the original property in Rare's hands. Rare is bought by Microsoft. The game releases and flops because Microsoft's customers hate colorful games especially ones about animals (and this stereotype exists as Super Lucky's Tale also flopped on the current Xbox console).

Ultimately the game is shelved as something Microsoft owns yet it does nothing with. I'm glad Krystal is in Nintendo territory, sure Star Fox is a failure series but at least she's not forgotten given she showed up in Smash Bros. Sorry but Microsoft is the worst possible company to own a property that isn't just shooting and grim gritty. And yes Conker is violent, but Xbox customers sees animals shooting shotguns and such as unappealing nonsense.

I agree with the first sentence, but I have a different take on why this design is so god damn furry. BFD Berri is just as shameless as far as being a sexy character, but I would argue that her design is better for being more straight forward than this character from a sequel that never happened.

CBD takes Looney Tunes-esque characters and puts them in a "mature" context for the sake of humor. Berri's design fits in with that aesthetic. Her outfit fits with what we know about her at the start of the game, which is that she works out. The fact that she is a sexy cartoon animal is funny to an average audience from the era who doesn't know what a furry is. She also winds up looking like a more over the top Lola Bunny, and Space Jam is well within the time frame of movies referenced by the game.

This Conker Getting Medieval character is by comparison is not funny. Maybe she was meant to be a parody of "furry " characters in the same way that Trophy Thomas was meant to be a parody of Crash and other animal mascots Rare thought were annoying, but with only the concept art to go with it's hard to tell. She definitely does not match the BFD aesthetic. It's a very busy design that would never fly in the sorts of cartoons that BFD draws inspiration, and not jsut because it's too sexy. It's a very busy design, and it looks like hers wasn't the only one. It doesn't do a good job of taking the complicated designs found in some Euro comics/Warhammer and making them funny by putting them on cartoon animals, but instead just makes for a very dorky looking display.

You know what sucks with the next Xbox and the PS5? We should be able to see anthro characters with perfect rendered fur. However as hardware got more powerful stupid developers mostly focus on "realism." It's real sad that the best looking cartoony game is freaking Kingdom Hearts 3.
