Soul vs. Soulless

Soul vs. Soulless.

Seriously WHY IS IT SO HARD TO NOT FUCK UP ARTSTYLE AND LIGHTING IN THESE GOD DAMN """""REMAKES"""""

Attached: Gaius-Shadow-of-the-colossus-comparison.jpg (1667x1965, 639.17K)

Because remaster companies think they know better than the original creators

My biggest gripe is how they completely fucked up wander's face. Also the music sounds lower and some of the colossi look kinda cartoony for some reason

Looks fine to me.

because, unless you're going to literally remake the assets from the ground up, "fucking up the artstyle and lighting" is all you can do.
Either they redraw everything from start(not happening), or they slap a few filters on the textures, fuck with the lighting, and take some gullible morons' money.

>when they make new assets but they're worse
I hate this so much, just port them I'd be happy.

Do people still argue about the way The Last Guardian looks?

Attached: TLG_E315_06_1434429409.0.0.jpg (1200x800, 206.94K)

You haven't truly experienced soulless

Attached: 7j2w1HZuw1.jpg (1908x2080, 748.45K)

why do remakes hate the dark so much?
every time a level is supposed to be dark the remakes make it lit up with neon colors its fucking horrible

whatever hair tech they used is garbage everything looks fluffy

Why have shadows and darkness gone to absolute shit since the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox days?

Seriously, what the fuck.

shit game either way. easy refund

Free on PS Plus right now so I quickly snatched it up.

Jesus Christ.

explain to me what's original sotc artstyle user, please.

Because lighting and other effects is often tied to other values that they accidentally fuck with without realizing when in development.

Square remakes alone could fiill an entire thread

The remakes were such huge mistakes

Actually I completely disagree

Bottom has soul

Granted Trials looks like it might be cool but holy fuck they did Secret of Mana dirty

Attached: 1366_2000.jpg (1280x720, 300.67K)

The new one's way better wtf?

PS2 was a special system, the good special. What was the point of "remasters" when they can't even recreate the effects/lighting/post processing? Remember the Silent Hill "HD Collection"? And I was pissed more than most people because they called it "collection", but left out 1+4, my favorite ones.

You picked a weird shot to show the differences. Only thing I don't like is that his face looks a bit chubbier in the remake, but that's more of a character design thing. The game itself still retains plenty of soul.

The people who never played the original don't know how badly they butchered these graphics, christ

it does not user don't even get me started I'm warning u

Remasters are done by B-teams. The best game devs don't work on other people's old shit.

I usually don't fall for Nostalgia, but the lack of sharpness on the PS2 really worked to this games advantage. PS4 doesn't look too bad as long as you're not zoomed in but PS3 isn't great

The remake fails to accurately protray space and lighting. This is because they switched to a dynamic lighting method, when the original had baked in lights and shadows. The baked in lighting allowed the creators to screw around and create the illusion of space and distance when objects were much closer in engine. Ueda is an art major and he knew about these techniques, used the purposefully.

Yea, that's a much better example. OP should've been this.

Okay, chill out user. I see it much more in this pic than in the OP pic. The fog in the upper pic in particular, really makes the remake look static in comparison.

I should have said that there was soul in both images, not in the game as a whole. I've never played the remake, so I shouldn't make that statement.

This one is actually acceptable. I was really excited when I got there. Some good items inside too.

Remake Kendo himself sucks though.

It's simple, back in the day each company had their own game engine and had full control over everything
Now they just use unreal engine, keep every default effects and just slap 3D models in it

Remember when they turned Bomberman into Ow the Edge and zoomed in the camera, on a bomberman game play field?

This shot kind of shows the main difference between the original and the remaster. In the original the gate you are heading towards is very clearly pointed out, while in the remaster it's completely lost in details.

Attached: sotc rant9.png (853x435, 388.28K)

Remake is better

PS3 looks best

Both are kino

Remake is worse

Might as well post a picture of half life 2 cinematic mod with ferns everywhere

you're pretty cool anons. I'm not OP but I have posted that picture a lot, usually people react pretty negatively to the shaggy bottom render.

some aspects are just embarrassing like the colossi not having self shadows.

Attached: no self shadowing.png (1904x464, 459.35K)

im sorry to say but you sound very VERY special

You now are aware that a Double Dragon 2 remake exists, look it up if you dare

Because every literally who retard wants to "fix" the games to let its mark on it despite none of them having the creativity to make something meaningful for themselves.

That and companies that give 0 fucks about the games and are just putting them on new engines to get some easy bucks.

Personally i believe the first ones are worse.

> very VERY

Get out of here Trump. You have a country to run.

Anyways, anyone else noticed that in the original you can see the gate to the forbidden land in the very first shot of the intro? The remake takes that away too.

Attached: sotc rant1.png (853x464, 209.14K)

I am legit curious if the remake kept the "dam" or "devil'S arena" that is out of bounds in the game or not. because the original team ico said that they kept that stuff in the game because it was a pain in the ass to delete. Maybe it's the same for the new team aswell who work with the source code. But I'd assume otherwise.

>This shot kind of shows the main difference between the original and the remaster.
no it doesn't

a good comparison has to make you ask "why?"

Attached: ferns.jpg (1822x504, 116.18K)

People still defend this to this day

Attached: bmhHxBn.jpg (1273x443, 139.16K)

I'm glad I never played the remake. The remake is technically impressive, but much less impressive artistically. It's the difference between a painting and a picture. Neither is objectively bad, but one is better at creating the intended mood exactly how the artist envisioned it

>Literal a bit tilted Arial font instead of an actual logo
>The lighting cant even compete with a fucking perendered background
>Wet asphalt to fool retards into thinking it looks cool
>Absolutely no ambient composition
Wew, lad.

It's less technically impressive than the original. Dynamic lighting is just an on/off switch and pretty well everything else is worse than the PS2 version.

Water physics are better and there are more polygons, that's about it.

NO HOW CAN YOU EVEN SAY THAT NO NO STOP

PS4 looks to be the worst to me

>the distinct lack of layers on the fur shading because the PS3 video memory is slower than the PS2 video memory, while trying to push a higher resolution

PS2 have 99 problems, but fillrate aint one

The biggest advantage the PS2 have over everything else is having 48GB/s of memory bandwith to fill a tiny 512x448 picture.
It's just fucking brutal raw pixel pushing power and it's everything, EVERYHING used on transparency.
All smoke/fur effects are downgraded on the bigger console versions due not having this sheer power.
It's the same reason why no other version of Silent Hill 2 got the fog right, or MGS2 effects.

Attached: 1583293318395.png (1081x756, 939.08K)

That explains so much about why PS2 emulation and ports from the system are missing the blur all the time.

Both look shitty, but the one on the left looks like a comfy, lived-in kind of shitty. The one on the right looks like the guy who made it was really proud of how well he could replicate a street corner he saw a picture of in a magazine.

compare the flying snake boss ps4 vs ps2, it's pretty mindblowing how much the ps2 shits on the remake when it comes to dust.

and yeah, ps2 emulation struggles with fully emulating the effects but it does it better than most ports.

Attached: imperfect comparison.webm (1292x346, 2.8M)

soul soulless
not even joking around, why did he make the right femwario so ugly?

You're gonna really hate the truth and it's gonna take you down a massive rabbit hole that will either cost you tons of time, space, research, a little money, piss you off endlessly and everyone else will think you're insane. Are you sure you want to know why?

Wtf is that what gun shops look like in America? With big ass neon signs? The left misses all the little details and griminess as well and ends up looking completely sterile.

>NOSTALGIA GOOD, ADULTHOOD BAD

Attached: 1530711034591.png (753x960, 28.9K)

Holy shit I just noticed they did shaded smoke on the PS2. That settles it. The remake is garbage.
