This is gonna get me shit, but FF8's Squall.

Redpill me. What makes him good? Haven't played through the FF series yet.

He's the only down-to-earth individual in a sea of retards who has a ton of responsibility thrust on him as a consequence for being the sole source of reliability. This causes him a fair amount of stress. He gets shit for being "emo," mostly by people who don't understand how teenage mercenaries with abandonment issues might be just a little less than perfectly adjusted. But if you have half a brain and the ability to read between the lines in his internal monologues, he's really a great protag.

Zidane is better than 'whatever' emo fag.

Stocke from Radiant Historia is based but don't play the remake he looks like a fag there

All checks out. Maybe you are fag?

He's not even the best protag in that game. Laguna is miles more interesting than fucking Squall

Laguna is a fucking doofus who gets given attention from people despite doing nothing to deserve it. Maximum autism and boner leg cramps? Hot bar singer slobbing on his knob. Make a token expression of concern while in prison? Suddenly the leader of a resistance movement, and later president of a newly freed nation. He's a funny guy, but he bumbles into all his success where Squall makes his with his own two hands. He is NOT better. More entertaining, sure. And with a much cooler battle theme. But not a better character.

most of the protags by that author are interesting, even the mute ones

Vagrant Story

Who is the author? I thought Kaga made them

Yuri Volte Hyuga from Shadow Hearts
Koudelka from Koudelka
Yuri from Tales of Vesperia
Ashley from WA2 for punching a cripple because he pissed him off.

that's all I can think of

you mean the OP pic? I was talking about my attached pic which is by Kanashimi Hocchikisu

This guy has a real punchable face

But it's cool because he punches sorcerer's and doesn't afraid of anything

Ah, okay. What kind of game is Towelket?

>not even one mention of "Aspect" Raidou Kuzunoha
Gay.

He's a silent protagonist.

Chadfiend is better

the games are generally speaking light on combat and exploration, and have a heavy story focus. It depends on the game, but pretty much all of them are a cocktail of cuteness, heartwarming moments, sexual humor - and also tragedy and horrifying violence.
Lurk here, right now there are 3 games tld into English

Vyse from Skies of Arcadia is a pretty great protagonist. Wouldn't say he's deep or anything like that, but he's the kind of protagonist you'd want in a JRPG, a good hearted no nonsense kid with a sense of adventure that drives him forward.

Pretty good quotes too.

Okay contrarian

Thanks bre

>a good hearted no nonsense kid with a sense of adventure

Never played SoA, but the major issue I take with those kinds of shonen protag characters is that they're too boring, they never change no matter what happens, does he experience any meaningful character development?

It's been a while since I played the game, but I think he was a good character for the game, he does change since he pretty much needs to take a commanding role by the first quarter of the game and the things that brings.

Can't say much without spoiling I guess, but I'd say he might not be what you're looking for if you want "meaningful character development".

I'd say the main character of Grandia 2 is interesting since he's basically a mercenary who doesn't really give a shit about anything but the job he has that eventually changes into something bigger and he seemingly changes too. I only got halfway through that though, but I always thought his character was interesting for how different he was.

and then his character shits the bed because he suddenly has feelings for some THOT

>Contrarian
Was that your first Kaga game or something?
Or do you think there's any general opinion about TearRing Saga here to go against in the first place, let alone a good one? Most people don't really like TearRing, even less people have played Berwick (The only good post FE Kaga game) and Vestaria has been just a tired repeat of the usual gimmicks Kaga has been doing since the beginning of his career.
If you're angry about people having different opinions at least use the appropriate buzzwords.

Would Squall have been more popular if they went with that?

I've played all FEs and can safely tell you Holmes and Runan are the best protagonists. Most people who finished the game enjoyed it. Sorry you have shit taste for a game you didn't play. You're clearly the angry one here considering you gave a whole paragraph to a single sentence.

Nice headcanon lol

You don't need a character to change to have an interesting character arc. Sometimes the interesting part is having them change the world after already having a Truth. Look up "Flat Character Arc."

Trails in the Sky FC and SC
Skies of Arcadia
FF Tactics
Drakengard 3
Maybe Radiant Historia

It's fine if you like that, but it's not for me.
I feel like a character needs to have journey and grow to be an actual good character.

>Most people who finished the game enjoyed it.
Yeah, all twenty of them, but sure I'm the angry one here.

>this character isn't a depressed cynical fuck like me, they must have their worldview shattered otherwise they're badly written!
I legitimately unironically hate you and every single person like you.

You're a projecting a whole lot on me from a simple "I like when the protag experiences meaningful character development"

>Stocke, Radiant Historia
>Fei, Xenogears
>Shion, Xenosaga
>Vyse, Skies of Arcadia

Did I forget anyone?

>>Shion, Xenosaga
God she was terrible

Yeah honestly, If his responses were funnier people would love him.

People like Neku from TWEWY and he's emo, but he's self-aware as well and funny about it.

She was a retard who let her emotions dictate her choices
In that respect she's unironically a well-written female protag

>You must love the generic starry eyed kid stereotype that litters most media for younger people, or else!
It has nothing to do with your inane projection, most people don't like it because it's extremely common and unsavory.
Same reason why you and a lot of other people don't like the depressed cynical fuck protagonist in most american games, they're extremely common character archetype that offer nothing new to some people.

Shion is terrible but she is also well written
She is a female written by a female writer, so she just gives an insight into the head of a typical Stacey

The entire Automata is just 9S' wild ride
He is the one who started the entire story, he is the one who suffered through all of it before Pods interfered with the intended bad ending

Attached: 1578999122801.jpg (1125x1200, 260.58K)

Estelle wouldn't be even half as good without Joshua, they are fucking amazing together because it's just a classic red-blue oni dynamic at work.

Disgaea 1.

Tell me about Tear Ring Saga, are they worth playing?
Which is better?

Too bad it'll be awhile before the game with the best protagonist is translated.

>most people
>it's unsavory
Looks like I was bang on

There's only one TearRing Saga, and yeah, if you like Kaga's FE it's worth playing, but mind that it's VERY guilty of Kaga's usual tics.
The second game is Berwick Saga on PS2, but it's JP only outside of a partial ENG patch, it's pretty good and probably the most interesting of the Kaga games from a gameplay point of view, especially since it works on hexes which is an interesting change, it starts out really slow though, slower than TearRing even which was ungodly boring until midway through.
Then there's Vestaria, the latest game, which is in english and available on Steam, didn't really like that personally and dropped it but again, it's a Kaga game through and through, so if you do like his games you might enjoy it even disregarding the nonexistent budget.

Never played a Kaga game but I'm going back and playing the older FE's after starting with the 3DS entries and 3H. I've played a bit of Binding Blade and Blazing Blade and really enjoy the lack of comedy relief SoL moments compared to the newer entries.
Would Tear Ring Saga be a good starting point if I'm kinda shit at SRPGs, or should I get through some of the older FE's first?

6 TL has been announced today, that's good enough I believe

Attached: 56440046_p0.png (2608x2481, 2.07M)

For someone that's not a "depressed cynical fuck" you sure are looking for reasons to hate people for no reason at all.

>Would Tear Ring Saga be a good starting point if I'm kinda shit at SRPGs
Sure, the game's really easy and broken just like the other FE by Kaga, and since it uses most of the same gimmicks it will retroactively teach you about the general meta for most of the older FE.
It's also a very lengthy game so you'll be busy for quite a while, unfortunately, the general game speed is also relatively slow so don't be surprised when late game maps take a lot to complete.

Neat, I'll stick in on my Vita and give it a shot later
