It had some genuinely great moments like Pedro. And anything with Bege was also pretty good, though he was mostly behind the scenes stuff and fucked off when his plan failed. But the arc as a whole was largely garbage. Big Mom was a horrible character, as were most of her subordinates. The Cracker fight dragged on way too long. And after Oda hyping up "Sanji's arc" and "year of Sanji" it only served to somehow make him even more pathetic than he already was post timsekip. Also the Vinsmoke shit in general just stopped being relevant through most of the arc and then had a half-assed closure.

It's more like One Piece itself has been going on for 23 years so it now has lots of boomer fans who grew up with the early arcs and now they are bitter adults entering or already in their 30s whose own lives aren't going so well and they project their own loss of childlike wonder and innocence onto One Piece. The take of "One Piece went to shit after the time skip" is their mind's way of expressing "My life went to shit when I became an adult".

It's mostly just the longer arcs that are shit because Oda is a hack that always devolves into "everyone runs around the island like a lunatic until Luffy beats the boss". Pretty much every post timeskip arc minus Zou has been this. Even before the timeskip, things like Skypeia, Enies Lobby, and Thriller Bark were the same. But at least when it happened before the timeskip it still focused on the SHs, while post timeskip sidelines them for a dozen throwaway characters every arc. Smaller arcs generally avoid this because they're concise enough to keep Oda's writing from wandering off and losing focus. Which is why the earlier East Blue arcs are some of the best in the series.

I don't see what's wrong with that. If you're going to focus on supporting characters at least make them interesting. Law was fine (even if he overstayed his welcome a bit) because he was properly developed during his time in the spotlight. Trash like the boxing king, conehead, and the dozen other nobodies from the Dressrosa tournament getting elevated to main character treatment during the latter half of the arc despite being shallow and not developed was a major factor of why Dressrosa was such a boring slog.

I mean, I just preferred East Blue because it seems so innocent and naive compared to later on. It really is just a few dumb kids not knowing their asses from their elbows, sailing around from spot to spot and stumbling into swashbuckling hijinks.

Once they got to the Grand Line it's always "Oh, here's another X-themed island, time for another overarching plot and big villain!" and they throw a punch that scatters 100+ dudes to the wind. Maybe I'm alone, but I miss when a few marines were a threat.

Nah, you're not the only one, I liked it better when Nami was flatter, half the crew was not deadweight and characters were not so many. I usually like when there are new characters but seeing how they are drawn and implemented makes me think they are just numbers.

They're by no means main characters. I wouldn't exactly call it a "skill ceiling" but it was more of a "success ceiling" that was established when all those pirate crews showed up to defend Whitebeard and Luffy still has only a fraction of followers by comparison. World building doesn't hurt, I barely even remembered Orlumbus the first time I read through Dressrosa but it's not like he got an entire chapter or anything.

Kinda feel the same, early one piece was really fucking fun and had that sense of adventure, when now it's mostly "let's go to the next themed island and let luffy beat the boss with some new power up".

Literally. All arc bosses are now 30 feet tall and growing and it's really jarring. What's extra stupid is there was a race of giants introduced early on that was supposed to be a big deal. But it doesn't actually matter when anyone can be fuckhuge for no reason because Oda doesn't know any other way to make someone intimidating.
Also I hate playing huge characters in musou games because they take up too much of the screen. I don't think I'll even be able to use Kaidou. The admirals were already pushing it, but just watching gameplay of him is disorienting.
