It's the SatAM cartoon, followed by the comics. Before SA1 and 2 Sonic didn't have much of a story to get autistic about. Sonic fans were invariably also fans of the cartoon and comics. They were hungry for something similar in the games, and then the Adventure games opened up the floodgates for autism. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Those types of fans were all over the fanbase. I should know, I was there and witnessed it first hand. It wasn't until much later that SatAM/Archiefags became more and more niche.
But yeah, it's definitely the cartoon and then the comic that started the Sonic autism people have grown to know and love/hate. It just evolved and branched out from there when the Adventure games rolled around.

I'm probably not the best guy for opinions about Sonic because I went off the series for pretty much the later 90's and early 2000's but I'm positive the comic languished in obscurity for much of it's run. It was pretty much exactly it's niche-ness that allowed it have zero quality control and only a fraction of people to defend that quality.
The only reason why it has notoriety now is because of it's miraculous jump in quality and the reboot to IDW.

Tiny toons was responsible for usenet and newsgroup furry autism, so that's a good starting point. The show ended in 1992 and sonic 2 would release at the end of the year. In 1993, satam began airing. It's very possible that the tiny toons autists migrated over to sonic. After all, most of the people in these internet cliques were computer nerds, so many of them would most likely have heard about the hottest new game franchise. Their favorite furry show had ended at the same time as sonic's rise to popularity, the perfect opportunity to bring their autosm over to sonic.

This is it. The games were largely still serviceable but the cartoons and the comic had all the ingredients prepared long-term. Stuff like Shadow had its own share of problems but the comics and the overall designs of the characters were established years before SEGA's fuckups were visible.

They have colorful characters and simplistic moral yet at the same time dark themes and a serious tone for its narrative. However for U.S. tv standards they are sold as PG-13 entertainment and broadcast late at night by Toonami so it can be sold as grown up show, yet at the end of the day it's still shonen.
