I've always used WASD but honestly, ESDF makes a lot of sense. No way am I reconfiguring every game I play for it though.

I use szxc because it gives me an extra row for MMOs and ARPGS for skills. Its easier than curling your fingers in to press zxcvb on the bottom row.

just get textured caps however you like them for wasd you fucking Mong. Modifier keys, esc, and bottom row, q, e, and r are all essential default mappings. Reaching for modifiers is awful. ESDF can't even make a case for ergonomics because even if you shift over the board left to compensate you don't gain any appreciable room on a 100% and it's not a problem on tenkeyless or smaller

Old games didn't have mouselook. You were intended to use the arrow keys with your right hand to move and other keys with your left hand to shoot or do what ever interactions the game had. Some of those games would have benefited from WASD and mouselook, but it just wasn't standard yet.

I can only imagine people legitimately using the arrow keys if they're left handed - and even then I feel like using the numpad would just be better.

Arrow keys come from a time before the computer mouse was mainstream.
There was little or no mouselook, so navigation was entirely arrowkeys or numpad and the rest of the keyboard was for UI.

I didn't even know ESDF was a thing so I just tried it and honestly it feels a lot comfier

I'm not typing when playing games, and yes I touch type using home row. but when I play games my hand rests in a relaxed position with the pinky over the shift key.
