New idtech engine, so they wanted to get all the mileage out of the geometric detail they could put on stuff. My guess, anyway.

I think they improve the usefulness of the sight in eternal with the addition of enemy weakpoints. Taking out the weak points of an enemy significantly cripples its ability to deal damage to you, leaving you to take care of other threats. But that's still fucking stupid compared to an endless barrage of missiles to murder everything you see.

After playing Sigil a fuckton everything else in Doom/Doom 2 just feels... bright and cheery
