It's not a coincidence in any way. Lots of companies do this kind of name-saming with the initial/fore structure of a title. It's so that their product, being a more recent release, is likely to show up on the autocomplete when people search google/twitch.tv/youtube/etc for the 'real' thing.

I think it's worth it for the story and shit to lvl a character to max lvl at least once.

But you should start on a pserver and see if you like it.
I personally recommend WotLK, I think it's peak WoW and you can always go back to the previous areas.
Also you see Arthas and shit which is pretty cool when you just finished Frozen Throne.

If you have a bunch of friends to play with WoW can still be fun, just don't expect it to last long unless y'all a bunch of minmaxing or achievement hunting autists.
By yourself I wouldn't recommend it.
