Daily reminder that matchmaking is cancer
Decline of server browsers led to the death of fun online multiplayer
>join server
>BTFO the 12 year old admin that bought the server with daddy's credit card
>get banned
Truly, those were the days, it totally isn't just the nostalgia goggles talking, all of those custom MLP skins and 3 gigs worth of custom .mp3's sure made the game more fun to play. Oh, and don't forget the actual malware you got on the MOTD page because the server runner was a cheapskate and actually put ads in the server.
Fucking accurate
Shouldn't have purposefully gone to third world MLP servers then, you absolute retard.
modern AAA devs are relying on fucking chrome for their main menu UI
not him but the great thing about those servers is that you could disconnect and FIND ANOTHER
If you get banned because you didn't "play Meta" or "called someone a baddie", you can't go find another server you half-wit imbecile. Getting banned by a salty admin is solved by literally clicking two buttons.
Picture if that 12 year old admin could ban you from the whole game, and you have t he modern matchmaking situation we have now.
This is actually old now. Nobody fucking talks to each other in game anymore. I’m playing fucking Halo and the whole match is silent.
> find a server owned by a retard
> instead of disconnecting, proceed to join and try to play, just to complain when your time is wasted and it's impossible to have fucking fun
It sounds like you're the retard here, user.
What's in between Stoner Zone and Hardcore?
Dedicated player
> Has a general idea of what they're after from the first moment
> Enjoys a mix of gamemodes but doesn't want to be thrust between them by force
> Will eventually find a small network of servers that runs most of what they want and stick with it
>join matchmaking pool
>btfo of some 12 year old
>call him a bad
>files a report against me because I said he wasn't very good at video games
>some 35 year old hipster sipping his ruby hot chocolate permanently bans me from a game I paid for
This truly is the better solution.
Dedicated servers at their worst are worse than SBMM at its worst.
But SBMM at its best never progresses beyond mediocre, while decent dedicated servers are already great, and absolutely brilliant at their best.
>Join server
>Chat people up
>Find out some live in my city
>Nice conversations all game while relaxing after work
>Play on server for a while
>Girl on mic
>Ask her if she wants to come over to my house so my mom can make us pizza rolls
>Whole server gets on it and we have a good time
Nowadays it's dead silent or people would claim you were harassing them and try to get you banned. I desperately miss server browsers
I like getting matched with randos.
The thing I don't like about dedicated servers is I feel like someone is in charge and I have to follow rules that they set out. It seems easy to irk whoever's running the show and get yourself blackballed for unseen transgressions.
Kind of like posting on Yas Forums.
Oh bullshit you fucking wanker. The only time admins actually kicked you for a dumb reason were if they needed a spot for a clan member or they "suspect" you are hacking
thats the whole idea of private servers, you can make your own rules on your own server. Also there are always private servers set up by the game dev where you can follow no rules.
>hit escape
>click server list
>click on one of the 50,000 other servers
>decide to play some valve payload
>enemy team is fully stacked and trying extremely hard, even know some names from previous valve payload pub sessions
>message some friends, they join and we also try super fucking hard
>server becomes like a Dynasty Warriors video game, with like 4 superhumans on each team slaughtering the rest of the peasants amd each other
>continues for many rounds and into other maps
>well over 6 hours of intense competitive pubbing
>if you get autobalanced you just get your boys to kick someone from your team and rejoin
Compared to today
>queue for payload
>wait an arbitrary amount of time to get in a server
>there's a stack on the enemy team
>call some boys
>they join my party and also wait an arbitrary amount of time to join the server, even though there's room for everyone
>play a round, start having fun
>get autobalanced if I don't retry fast enough
>can't rejoin my team
>game ends
>everyone leaves the server
>have to wait another arbitrary amount of time to get in another server
I just want to play video games with my friends
>hacker joins server
>12 yo admin bans him
>get matched with hacker in MM
>suddenly miss having that 12yo around
Very true
I was playing warfork and got banned from an instagib server for not moving fast enough. Ban message was "this isn't cs"
I was going like 800ups and ki
>server becomes like a Dynasty Warriors video game, with like 4 superhumans on each team slaughtering the rest of the peasants amd each other
I've never thought of this comparison but now I recall this is one of my favorite experiences, both as one of those peasants and as one of the superhumans.
>malware you got
only low iq people get malware just from visiting a website
Someone should email this to Gabe.
>tfw a hatless soldier comes wide at you and you give him the double airshot and he probably doesn't even understand how hard he got destroyed
Nothing personnel.... Kid.....
I hate this. Might as well be playing vs bots
There will always be morons like the admin you mentioned. Ive been banned multiple times for reasons like yours. The most common ones were "no camping" or "no hacking" when i wasnt camping or hacking, but rather the admin was getting killed too often by me. It doesnt mean its the norm, every game i played that had private servers had atleast one legit server where i could play the way i want.
That might have been true over a decade ago before those things died out but you forget some major differences about the internet at the time. It was mostly first world people playing first world people. Now that China, Asia, South America are major consumers often trying to use American or European servers you're faced with the fact that every one of those sub groups would be terrorized by hackers and game tilters. With that influence you get what happens today even when you can make your own servers. The game devolves into a few modes where the hackers cant as easily exploit their tools and dies.
Yannow usually Yas Forums is the exact opposite of intelligent and insightful but yeah, this is pretty much the truth.
Broken clock, I guess. Fuck console multiplayer for forcing this horror on us.
That's nonsensical.
>hack on a dedicated server
>get banned by the admin
>hack on a matchmaking game
>other players report you
If the report system is super responsive
>you get kicked but the game loses quality because reportspamming creates a no fun zone
if not
>you don't get kicked and all the other players are stuck with you
Dedicated servers mean admins. Admins means by-the-game rule enforcement by a real person, which is simply not possible in matchmaking.
Battlefield 2 was so good for this, 3 good players and a hummer could run the whole map.
>laughs in special forces with 6 c4 blocks taped to the front of an ATV
I still remember the time I went Lu Bu on the enemy team in a game of 2142
>titan game
>we're getting owned
>alright fukdis
>load up my Lambert carbine and rdx
>steal an enemy apc, drive it under their titan, hide that shit in some trees to use as a concealed respawn
>proceed to blow up the titan, all four consoles and the reactor, SOLO
I think by the end of it half their team was in there trying to stop me.
Key word. TRYING.
Best night I ever had went like this. I was a Jet fag always wishing people would actually paint targets and call for support. Ran into a group of guy in a hummer and proceeded to wreck everything they painted and run crazy CAS for them for hours. Was a blast and a slaughter.
This. And eventually you find a server you like and the other 49,999 servers don't matter.
My favorite part was seeing regulars on the server at different times of the day and having some of them say hi to me.
>btfo 12 year old admin
>not laugh your ass offing with your friends as you read the ban messages to each other
Clearly you had, and very likely have, no idea how to have fun.
There's some truth to this image but it ignores the fact that games with matchmaking almost always have non-competitive modes as well. I think the problem is more complicated.
I want everyone to take a moment of silence for the great dedicated servers, communities and friends we lost along the years. I'll never forget the good times
>compared to now where the 12 year old is the game developer and bans you from the whole game and not just the server
You know what's sad? You'll never get emergent gameplay like surf ever again now that dedicated servers are dead.
Surf was the greatest fucking shit ever in counterstrike and if you think otherwise you're a cunt
Before
>join server
>BTFO the 12 year old admin that bought the server with daddy's credit card
>get banned
Now
>Join server
>BTFO the 12 year old playerbase that got the game with daddy's credit card
>They all report you
>Get banned
So much better!
>The thing I don't like about dedicated servers is I feel like someone is in charge
I don't know why retards say this shit as if it's any difference with matchmaking.
At the end of the day someone is still IN CHARGE, the only difference is that you can't see them or interact with them and thus can't hold them accountable.
It's like you're all fucking retarded or something.
>but it ignores the fact that games with matchmaking almost always have non-competitive modes as well.
Having a non-competitive que doesn't fix any of those issues, m8.
B-but they got rid of the number next to the queue button, user!
>join one of my favorite servers
>get a knife kill
>(The guy I just killed): not again
There is no feel like that feel
>instead of disconnecting, proceed to join and try to play, just to complain when your time is wasted and it's impossible to have fucking fun
Ah yes, I too love to complain and whine because I'm having fun destroying a retard server owner.
user, please engage your reading comprehension. I was replying to the guy who said that because some servers were bad, server browsers were shit.
OP is just butthurt that he can't dominate in scrub servers against players with less game time.
>Playing Battlefield 2142.
>Some dude joins the server.
>Name is something along the lines of "DedicatedAirTransportPilot"
>Announces to the team that we will win as long as he gets a transport with thwo competant gunners.
>Hop in one of the guns.
>Dude wasn't lying.
>Lending fire support to any point that comes under attack while simultaneously providing a mobile spawn point.
>Enemy sends attack aircraft after us, but the pilot always positions us perfectly to shred the bogeys before they touch us.
>Enemy tries to send their own transports, but pilot dude outmaneuvered them every time.
>Top the scoreboard along with pilot and gunner number 2 ever time I'm online with the guy.
>EA shuts down servers a week later.
It was always pretty fun when that shit happened though i personally compare it more to Battride War over the Dynasty Warriors games.
dude youre right
those WERE the days
me and my friends STILL have fun trying to speedrun getting banned using subtlety and when we got caught we'd just move on to the next server
What a great fucking feeling. My favorite instance of this kind of thing happened about a year ago.
>Reminiscing about old vidya to my gf.
>Decide to boot up CoD: United Offensive.
>Haven't played in close to two years.
>Find an active base assault server.
>Teams have been deadlocked for ages by the time I join.
>Grab a jeep, blare my horn while speeding towards the enemy's last bunker.
>Run over three of them on the way.
>Hop out, run in, kill the guy guarding the basement, and plant my bomb.
>Kill two or three others who come down to diffuse.
>Bunker detonates.
>Just won a game that was probably going on for nearly 30 minutes in about three minutes.
>Immediately leave the game.
>Haven't returned since.
>Say you're in MMR/ELO hell
>People immediately assume you think of yourself as some God tier player and everybody else is the problem
>The reality is the game keeps putting you up against opponents way out of your league over and over, tanking your stats to Get carried back up to 50%> winrate despite always coming dead last on the teams with abysmal scores
>Cycle repeats ad infinitum
While the game hasn't really fallen to matchmaking shit because it can't really fall to it, I miss old modded faction servers on Minecraft. Especially one old tekkit factions server, was fun as hell but all that shit is gone now because of severs like Hypixel, Minecade, etc alongside some pretty annoying "connection aborted by host machine" error I haven't been able to fix that prevents me from playing on most multiplayer servers. Can't even find any help in mcg.
>this happens
>blacklist server
>can find another one easily
Now you still get kicked/banned by salty retards, only now you can't go find another server because you've received a timeout for it.
Fucking faggot. Custom Content was fun as hell too.
The worst part of this is that no one bonds online like they used to. I still remember all the people I used to play TTT with something like 9 years ago, in fact I just got back in touch with some of them a month or so ago. I couldn't tell you a single person I interacted with through TF2 matchmaking last month though.
So you got banned from a shit server. Why cry about that, he did you a favor.
You right.
also known as Warcraft 3: Refunded
>Stumble onto an TF2 idle/trade server 8 years ago
>It's owned by some 14 year old german-sounding kid
>The kid is teaching themselves game design, they modified the map drastically so what was usually a boring map meant to level up stranges and farming items was actually large and pretty fun
>Play on this server every day after school for a month or two
>Eventually the kid gets the idea to make a website that keeps track of points. The more you play, the more points you get.
>The points could be spent on getting custom stats for weapons, something no other server had or really has had since
>Server never really takes off, just has a core following
>Every once and a while he'll implement some strange script he made himself, like once he made something that caused pyros to explode if they m1+w
>Kid starts acting like kind of a dick for no reason, stick around anyways because the server's still fun
>The ability to farm items by going to idle servers is patched out by valve
>In response the kid makes a whole new custom map meant for screwing around in
>Kid starts getting absolutely insufferable
>Eventually decide to boot up source SDK myself to see what I can do
>He messages me and tells me to stop because I don't know how
>After not figuring anything out, I give up (I was 12 give me a break)
>Kid claims he has cancer somewhere along the way, but he seems fine
>I've played on this server for about a year now
>He does something to make me really angry so I unfriend him and stop playing the server
>A few months later, he dies of cancer
>The server is gone, the usual players stop talking to each other
>Rejoin his steam group to pay respects
>Check up on it a few months later
>Kid never had cancer, but nobody has been able to get in touch with him either.
TF2 will never have the same soul. And matchmaking will never quite give you experiences like this.
