A scalychad after my own heart. I just like playing as races in general that aren't just human. You always have human, small buff humans, small gay humans, pointy eared humans, green angry humans. Even if they're not lizards or furries or whatever the hell, make some other playable races in your fantasy rpg's people. Maybe a race of monsters who just want to live peacefully, or demons?

I know exactly what you mean, I've always wanted to play or romance the weird races in videogames but there's just no support for them in any game. My guess is that it's a mix of most people just playing humans and also not wanting to make new animations, skeletons and armor sets for every non-standard race.

I have never found a game that allows you to do this though. It's always bipedal races at the very least and most of the time they're not very good games either. I hate it so much.

BG contains more side-quests than the entirety of the rest of the open world, so you still have time
BG2 has more varied locations, but the open world isn't actually open. you unlock travel locations as you accept quests

Did you try divinity original sin 2? Not sure if that's what you're looking for but you can play as a lizard, romance a lizard(No clue how that works, don't give a fuck about romance) or be an undead skeleton lizard.

And yeah, forests and mines in BG 1 get tiresome after a while, I'll give you that. I'll be first to admit that BG1 locales are a bit bland. I guess you can put a blame on low-lvl play and Sword Coast being VERY bland. The story picks up from now, though.
And the locales in BG 2 are way, way more interesting and crazier, including the pirate island, crazy asylum, motherfucking Underdark, underwater city, planar travelling and Hell itself.

I tried it but I didn't quite like it. The fact that they put a ton more effort into preset main characters turned me off, and I dunno, I just don't enjoy the whole game. The idea of physical shields and magic shields, the fact that the optimal party is either 4 fighters or 4 wizards, the lack of progress you feel throughout the game and the fact that the game just plain shat itself before I entered that blood island and refused to go beyond 10fps made me not like it.

It likely is the fact that it'd take time and effort to model new armor and animations for every other race. I personally think it's worth it even if it's just one race. Just makes it feel like an actual fantasy setting instead of a bunch of people larping.

That's what drew me in initially. Being able to not only play a lizard-like race but the skeleton of one too. I've rarely seen skeletons be anything but enemies so being able to play as one, that come with its own set of perks and negatives, sounded cool. Even if I had my issues with the game like cursed fire being fucking EVERYWHERE late game, I loved all the little details and various ways of going about things.

Wrath of the Righteous is a different game in the same setting but a different part of the country.
Kingmaker should be cheap right now because of the Humble Bundle, the only DLC worth getting is Wildcards

From what I played the optimal party isn't 4 fighters and 4 mages, since some enemies have way more physical than magical defense, so it's good to vary it. The only other game I can think of off the top of my head is their other game, Dragon Commander, but from what I remember people saying about it, the game is really damned easy and fairly mediocre. Outside of porn there isn't much romancing stuff that isn't close to humans.

Wrath of the Righteous is a sequel that's in production right now.
Kingmaker has 3 DLC: Wildcards - that gives you access to tiefling race, kineticist class and the best waifu in the game. Then Varnhold, that is a sorta prequel to Kingmaker with a different PC, and then Beneath the Stolen Lands that is an Icewind Dale style romp through an infinite procedurally generated dungeons.
Of all of them Wildcards is a must - Kaessi is a fucking great companion, the rest are pretty solid but not essential.
