All that wasted space in New Vegas map

Just because it's a post-apocalyptic desert doesn't mean it needs to be boring as fuck. It's a video game and therefore should be entertaining. If they can't think of ways to make a post-apocalyptic desert open world interesting, then don't make it open world. Mad Max made the same mistake.

If you walk in any direction you'll find something, just like any other open world Fallout game
It has a ton more content than 3

Most open world games are padded out with empty terrain and a few hot spots for actual content, even the ones that have no excuse for it given their location. NV at least has places to visit spread all over and not huge clusters of nothingness.

Having to navigate your way to New Vegas was the entire point though. The sense of adventure just wouldn't be the same if you could just b-line straight to the city from the get-go.

after enjoying fallout 1 so much i was really looking forward to playing new vegas as everyone here raves about that game. in the end it was one of the most miserable gaming experiences i've ever had. it looks like shit, it plays like shit. it was kind of fun with all the side quests until i reached new vegas. there i partnered with yes man and all i had to do was run from there to some clans and speak with them. what a piece of shit game

The long route to Vegas is canon. You're meta-gaming if you head to Vegas from the North at the start of the game, at which point why fucking play a roleplaying game at all? The plot doesn't make sense and the majority of characters still act like you took the long route in the first place.

New Vegas is one of the only games that got the open world meme right, by first utilizing it for a linear lengthy journey before opening it up

Arriving at NV for the first time was such a wild experience. I remember getting stuck at the security robots because I had neither pass nor money. When I was about to voice my frustration I realized how far I wandered already. It's crazy.
