What jrpg would you recommend to someone that hates anime, turn based games and never played one before? I always see people praising jrpgs and even though they just all seem like the same waifubait 500 hour snoozefests, i feel obligated to try some since half the god damn games available on switch are jrpgs and i wanna get some value out of this piece of shit
What jrpg would you recommend to someone that hates anime, turn based games and never played one before...
Super Mario RPG (SNES)
Tactics Ogre (PS1)
SMT 3 Nocturne probably
the SMT series are pretty fun and i don't like jrpgs that much
arent those smt and persona games dating sims? i have a vita too and people always recommended persona 4 golden, might have to check that out
The first SMT game is a mad max apocalypse with gameplay from Wizardry. Persona is high school with Pokemon.
I'm in the same boat as OP. "hmm, maybe i'll check out the gameplay". Checks out gameplay.
This can't be fun. You're all lying sunvabitches.
Why is he refusing a smash invite?
Start with turn-based WRPGs, like Fallout 1/2, Baldur's gate or Pool of Radiance 2: Ruins of Myth Drannor before JRPGs. Learning to like Turn-based combat before dealing with the other irritants.
>Jarpig hold the animu that doesnt overstay its welcome
Say no more M Knight Famalam
are chrono trigger, smt 3 nocturne and p4g good games to get into the genre then?
>p4g
No, ignore p4.
Parasite Eve
Don't play jrpgs. Given by what you said, you clearly won't enjoy them. Stick to wrpgs or whatever you like.
looked at gameplay videos of what was recommended so far and it all just looks so boring to me. i guess you‘re right, maybe the genre just isn‘t for me
i probably wouldn't since you just told me you hate the genre. instead get DMC3 special edition, Pokken, and Smash bros.
If you absolutely must then the forbidden jutsu Romancing Saga 2 and 3. You wouldn't be able to deal though they would be too fucking sick for you.
i doubt a „romancing“ game would appeal to me
Dark Souls
Nier
aight nigga enjoy your journey of finding a thing you don't like. shouldn't have asked if you didn't want a legitimately good response.
>hates anime
ok that's like 90% of JRPGS cut right there
>turn based gameplay
and that's another 90% of the JRPGs right there.
So maybe like...
Dragons Dogma?
>but Dragons Dogma isn't a jrpg!
It's an open world action RPG made by a Japanese company, get over it.
SaGa. Any of them. Romancing SaGa 3, Frontier SaGa 2, and Scarlet Grace are those that I think would be good first games to try in the series for someone who doesn't like anime that much. Romancing should be available on Switch, as well.
i just told you i dont like animu kawai shit and you recommend me a romancing game. motherfucker i dont wanna date god damn 2d anime girls
I'm not too hot on JRPGs, but I enjoy the Xenoblade games.
Dragon's Dogma is also great, but it's about as "J"-less as a JRPG gets. Same with the Souls series.
I'd recommend you to end your life.
Romance can also mean "a quality or feeling of mystery, excitement, and remoteness from everyday life", and that's what it means in this case. Just look into it before you associate it with stuff like Persona.
looks pretty good, how is the switch version?
Y's: Oath in Felghana
Play it on PC for 60fps.
Also, Dragon's Dogma is about as much of a JRPG as Dark Souls is. It's a godlike game, but not a traditional JRPG in the sense that you (I'm assuming you're OP) is thinking of.
It's playable. Obviously it's the worst experience out of all the options, but I've gone through about half the game on my Switch in portable and if you're ok with muddy textures and 30fps you'll be fine.
Kinda a joke how many people are recommending you ANIME/TURN BASED jrpgs when you specifically said you hate them though. Buncha flatheats.
Dragon's Dogma
Dark Souls
Nier Automata
Ys
Secret of Mana
Legend of Mana
As someone who recommended him some turn-based games, I recommended the ones I thought were good because he said that he's never played them before.
i mean i am kinda asking for that. i wanna try games that could change my mind
Tokyo Jungle
>SMRPG
Turn based
>Tactics Ogre
Turn based
>SMT games
Turn based and anime as fuck, every single one of them
Pretty good list, but none of them are JRPGs
Best in the thread so far
Pretty good
>Romancing Saga
get the fuck outta here those games are trash, and turn baesd
>Dark Souls
Top tier choice
>Nier
Pretty anime, but still pretty good
>DD
Top tier choice
>SaGa
Turn based trash
>Xenoblade games
Anime as fuck
>Ys
Anime as fuck
Xenoblade Chronicles.
You mentioned having a Switch. Give Definitive Edition a try when it comes out later this year. I've tried many JRPGs and very few of them actually hook me, but I consistently enjoy the Xenoblade series. They're not turn-based, either. The combat is very unique and has a great flowing "combo" system where you stagger enemies and shit. Pretty fun. Good music and a great story. Not SUPER anime, either - XC2 is, though.
Tales of Symphonia
Final Fantasy Tactics
Vagrant Story
Souls and Dragon's Dogma are only JRPGs in the sense that the are RPGs made in Japan. OP is being contradictory: he's asking for JRPGs while specifically stating that he doesn't want anyone to recommend him JRPGs.
I love Souls and DD, but they're not JRPGs beyond the technicality of the name.
first step is to get some taste
i‘ll get it when it comes out then. having a switch is actually the reason i made this thread, whenever i complained that there wasn’t enough on the switch except for ports, people would list dozens of jrpgs so i thought i‘d at least try to find a place to start with them
jrpg games are literally all turn based.
Except Chrono Trigger, but that's anime.
see
I'm both and You should try Dragon's Dogma and Souls for sure, but if you want an actual JRPG that you might like, play Xenoblade.
The Lord of the Rings game on PS2 that played like a JRPG would be good to get into the gameplay from a Western vantage point.
There's also the Digital Devil Saga duology also on PS2. It's not short and not light on plot, but Press Turn is my personal favorite JRPG combat system and the story is not waifubait despite focusing on a "special" female character.
alright thanks
>I hate japanese games pls recommend me one
yeah they tend to be boring grindfests
the only genre they always do right is horror
>grindfests
kys you faggots always act like jrpgs are the best there is, yet whenever i enter a jrpg thread all i see WITHOUT FAIL AND EVERYTIME is just people wanking off to their waifus, claiming „wives“ and whatever else mentally ill fuckery you can come up with. how come nobody ever talks about the gameplay? how come whenever i look at the gameplay of a jrpg its just the same turn based fight with some enemy that has more hp, does more dmg as the game goes on. the same bullshit and people play those for hundreds of hours pretending its the pinnacle of gaming. i want to understand what the fuck you see in these games beyond your big tiddy waifus
You sound like a fag user..
You can enjoy Nier but not enjoy SaGa? Is something wrong in your head?
It sounds like your only exposure to JRPGs is shit like Neptunia
Pay them no mind user. Let them revel in their waifushit cringe in peace while we continue BTFOing their genre.
If you played neptunia you basically played 99.99% of J"RPG"s out there. There's a reason it's so many anons' most hated gaming genre.
>Neptunia is representative of all JRPGs
Oh user, you silly little cunt
alright tell me right know which jrpg i should play then
nah I can forgive you for you know not what you say son of two men. The Romancing Saga games aren't about your backwater literal sense of romance that you're only familiar with due megan foxes toe shaped thumb in transformers side story of love. Nah retard and due to your ignorance you wont ever enjoy some of the greatest technically astounding turn based jrpgs made by the mad man himself.
I tried to give you an idea user an idea which would have led to boxing lobsters and snowmen fighting squids with playable taliban main character (sick with curvy swords) and a head full of fuck trying to find out how to make the bard useful. But nah u rite romance = love or some shit. stay pleb retard im out.
would FF XV qualify?
Do you really want him to hate all JRPGs because you recommended him a bad one?
it isn't turned based, and is not technically anime
I don't know what kind of games you like
You don't like turn-based games, which significantly limits appropriate recommendations, unless you're actually looking for a turn-based game to change your mind
And "I hate anime" is a pretty vague statement that doesn't really help me out in terms of a game's aesthetic
There are a LOT of different experiences, gameplay styles, stories and aesthetics in the JRPG umbrella, so starting out by saying "I don't like JRPGs, recommend me a JRPG" is incredibly unhelpful
Sure, but why recommend a bad game?
yes, basically i don‘t like x genre recommend me games from x genre to change my mind. and yes it is stupid of me to try to get into a genre that clearly doesn‘t appeal to me but these games are basically all there is on this god damn piece of shit tablet so i wanna still give it a shot
Maybe Mother 3? I don't really play JRPGs, but it's easily my favourite game. It's turn-based but you do extra damage if you tap along the music.
Dark Souls.
What I'm saying is that "JRPG" is an incredibly broad genre, and I don't even necessarily agree with calling it a genre because of that.
You could play 10 different JPRGs and get completely different experiences all the way through.
Pokémon, Chrono Trigger, MOTHER 3, Persona, Legend of Dragoon, Digimon World, Parasite Eve, Dark Souls, Kingdom Hearts, Paper Mario
Just off the top of my head, all Japanese RPGs, none of them alike.
>Souls and Dragon's Dogma are only JRPGs in the sense that they are JRPGs
