Discord is just reflective of your ability to make worthwhile friends or not. If you're some dumbshit loser who joins public Discords, you'll have a bad time. If you have friends and make a private server for your friend circle, you'll have a good time.

The frustrating part is that it removes any need to socialize ingame. Everyone just does it through discord, it's so difficult to find conversation or people who want to chat ingame in most games I play. Irony never ceasing to amaze, fortnite is the only game I ever have people just talking ingame anymore, usually it's "join our discord" in league or ff or wow or fuck any mmo really.
I just want to use the game, why is that so hard? I don't mind discord, though, it's benign, no worse than skype. Just so widespread.

Are you retarded? People used small skype groups all the time, they just had shit functionality. Can you really not wrap your head around 6 or 7 friends having a voice channel for games and using the chat area to post video guides or tutorials for shit like MMO raids or for fps strats?

Proprietary slack-like text and voice chat with mobile, browser and desktop client. Easy to extend with bots and a really user friendly interface. Also it's free.
That's the non meme answer to discord. Why is it so popular now? Because of good marketing, all the above and by not being as terrible as the other options.
