One of my favourite games

It's really solid
One of the most timeless games I could think of.

Better than its sequel.

What is a good emulator for this game? I tried Bizhawk and while the game ran fine I sometimes got these weird miscolor issues.

Dolphin

Just buy it on N64, the games like 500円

timeless classic

use dolphin to emulate the wii virtual console version

far easier than dicking around emulating n64

it lags a lot on dolphin though
what settings are you using on dolphin?

best pm game, best ninty 64 game

I felt it lacked the edge TTYD and SPM had in its writing. Part of why I adore the later games is how batshit insane and meta they get.

In TTYD you have Mario solving Agatha Christie murders and joining a wrestling arena with the main hub being a crime-ridden shithole where the mob is in open warfare against the hoodlums on the east side

In SPM you have Francis, Luigi getting bonked on the head and thinking he is a supervillain as well as Mario going to limbo and striking a deal with the underworld to get out

PMs zaniest moment is a vague reference to the TMNT and then the usual suspects of grass/desert/forest/ice stuff. Nothing wrong with that if thats your thing, but the big strength of Mario RPGs in my opinion was that it put Mario in situations and scenarios that would normally make no sense. To me, PM1 feels like IS going through the motions of a regular Mario game while TTYD and SPM feels like the developers actually had fun making them and you really feel that with how creative they are.

That isn't to say PM1 can't be argued to have better level design or mechanical whatnot, but for me its story and settings are just a too safe and bland to be really interesting.

Attached: enjoyment.png (327x296, 166.05K)

i disagree, and it was pm64 that had the murder mystery. but respect.

Paper Mario RPG is literally THAT LEVEL the game, not a single chapter is enjoyable and especially on a second play through

It worked on project 64 for me

PM had the murder mystery, but ttyd had both the glitz pit mystery and the train mystery

The other turn based games had cooler defensive play.
It was pretty good tho.
>TTYD had order switching and superguards
>Mario and Luigi had the individual guarding

I enjoyed it.

it is too bad that the glitz pit and train are a terribly boring slog on repeat playthroughs. funny that ttyd fans hate boggly woods, even though it's a chapter with good exploration, bosses, and enemies.

>PMs zaniest moment is a vague reference to the TMNT
Not
>The giant invincible monster that eats ghosts
>The shy guy army terrorizing the town and hiding in a giant toy box
>mummys curse
>the star children who live on a snowy summit disguising themselves as a monster
>The murder mystery that the TTYD recycled
>etc
You clearly didn't play it or don't remember the lets play you watched.

>not a single chapter is enjoyable and especially on a second play through
This take is worse than the other guys.

It's better than its sequel.

Soul epitomized

>Paper Mario RPG is literally THAT LEVEL the game, every single chapter is enjoyable
FTFY

project 64 worked fine for me but the default settings do have texture and audio issues. You have to try out the other engines they have available to get it working properly and toggle some audio sync options but otherwise it ran super smooth. I really enjoyed my playthrough since I only rented it for a few days as a child and got stuck because I was stupid

Idk what it is about boggly woods the visuals or the music but it starts giving me a headache after about an hour

You do realize the dolphin uses the same shitty HLE to emulate as the n64 emulators right?

Great game. I hope we get a sequel on Switch in the same gameplay style.

Tested P64, and got the same problems. Maybe its got something to do with my drivers?

You bite your toungue. Boogly woods is like the 2nd best chapter. You can cut the atmosphere of that place with a knife.

Thanks, will try this.

that's what I said

TTYD had better partners and story, but level design was comparatively lacking with way too much back tracking.

It's my favorite videogame.

I'm sad a game with TTYD's combat and PM's world design is never going to happen.

>That isn't to say PM1 can't be argued to have better level design or mechanical whatnot
That's the thing, TTYD's levels are really small, completely straight lines and more often than not involve heavy backtracking. But on the other hand, TTYD has a much better combat system, as expected.

Still, like other anons have pointed out, I still think you're selling the game's charm way short: the Shy Guy Invasion, the stuff with the boos in the Spanish-looking setting, the flower fields, the desert and island that are not straight lines, the murder mystery and mystical starkid stuff, those Peach sections.... The game settings ooze wonder and charm. But yes, I'll agree TTYD's cheekiness and edge are great.

Attached: 1582245108452.jpg (392x495, 119.87K)

i wish someone would make a romhack of paper mario 64 with ttyd's stylish system and partner health. shit would be so cash. make enemies harder to make up for it.

You've got that completely wrong, I'd argue TTYD is a lot more painful on the second run with all the backtracking.

I like how out of the Mario RPGs it most felt like a traditional Mario adventure expanded into an RPG

elder god tier: chapter 2, chapter 7
high tier: chapter 3, 8
great tier: chapter 5, 6, 1
good tier: chapter 4

>The game settings ooze wonder and charm
Agreed, I knew I was in for something special as soon as I saw a Paratroopa literally dressed as a paratrooper and delivering mail I knew PM64 was going to be something special.
It just really fleshed out the concept of Mario in a way, enemy species like Goombas and Koopas weren't actually enemies and could speak and live in little villages and such, Paper Mario established communities within the MK.

I know a lot of people dislike the Flower Fields chapter but I really enjoyed it. To me it's the epitome of "lazy laid-back summer day".

I get where you're coming from, but this was N64 Nintendo, they weren't really doing much with edge at the time. Everything was still pretty clean and friendly looking.
Having PM64 be a fairly standard Mario story worked in its favor I think. There's nothing too crazy at stake, while there was enough flexibility that the RPG format allowed for the world to be expanded upon and introduce all sorts of unique characters that made the game all the more memorable.

I like how a pleasant and nonthreatening location was one of the later and more difficult levels.

>In TTYD you have Mario solving Agatha Christie murders.

Did you even play the game? All you do is solve the crime of a fatass stealing a pot of stew.

I like to call Flower Fields the 'Golden Afternoon' chapter considering it's basically a scene from Alice in Wonderland

>It just really fleshed out the concept of Mario in a way, enemy species like Goombas and Koopas weren't actually enemies and could speak and live in little villages and such
This. This is very important. It can't be stressed enough how well-developed this stuff makes the mario world look. Among the NPCs, there are lots of koopas and lots of goombas, the default koopas are nice folk, the bad koopas have sunglasses and punk bracelets, Peach's castle in the prologue already has one of those annoying penguin enemies from Yoshi's Island, the very first gaggle of NPCs you meet are a family of uniquely designed goombas, fuzzies and shy guys are organized trouble makers with their own focused setpiece, the Ninjis are a clan of caretakers... And naturally, TTYD followed up on this. Paper Mario 1-2 is the most detailed and believable the Mario setting has ever been, every Mario species with their role in the world, and they still had new characters and enemies. It makes it look so welcoming, it's charming as fuck.

Sticker Star and Color Splash however say fuck to all that.

10/10 pure kino

64=SSS>TTYD>BIS>SMRPG>SPM>PIT>PJ>DT>CS>SS

Nah it’s shit, accept that zoomer
LOOOOOOL
Nah it’s shit on the first run too, Mario Story is 100 times better

I liked how items got their own personality too, Mushrooms were actual food you could stir fry or put in a cake, Fire Flowers were basically small Ifrits from FF, and you had a bunch of other stuff like tonics to cure status and Fright Jars to just nope.jpg trivial fights

You can fuck off with that rhetoric.

Color Splash fleshed out the enemy NPCs to be more than just mindless evil drones with sunglasses. It's well written and the characters don't need silly little hats for it to be good.

There's a fair bit of backtracking and going about, but how can you not love the area, with all the unique NPCs with their own leitmotifs, (including this youtube.com/watch?v=wIMYbXe8brw ) and the fact you get to restore the place to its former full beauty with the mcguffins you're collecting. I'd still defend it's a very well put together area.

I'd take it over stuff like the Boggly Woods any day, and I feel bad saying that, I love TTYD.

Great game, excellent bosses. Normal enemy encounters drag on in late game.

Explain what you dislike about it instead of providing non-arguments

SMRPG=64>TTYD=SSS>DT>PJ>SSSDX>PiT>BIS>BISDX>CS>SS

I don't agree with Paper Jam using toads, but having three characters per battle was too good.

I thought about it and I changed my mind.

>BIS being that low

Attached: 1581453668708.jpg (560x418, 17.75K)

The chapters are mostly just rehashes of the original Mario Story but less fun
The paper stuff is too in your face
The chapters are boring
The graphics are worse
The characters are boring
Way, way, way too much backtracking

TTYD was superior in every way.

but 64 was still nice

>Thinking turn based RPGs where you only get to attack once are fun
>Thinking constant giant battles destroying the pace of the game are fun
BIS used to be my favorite, but it gets worse with consecutive playthroughs. I just dropped the remake once I got to the second giant battle. Not because I wasn't enjoying myself, but because they're so boring. Dream team does the same thing, but they go all out when you're in the dream world. Those battles were the best in the series before Paper Jam came and took them to the next level.

Explain what you like about it instead of providing non-positives

I was talking about 64, guess I should have specified that

TTYD had
>better battle system
>better partners
>much smoother gameplay overall
>more complex battle system
>more items/badges/etc to mess around with
>more SOUL, for lack of a better term

it just felt like it directly improved upon every single thing 64 did right

but no, it's just "non-positives" because your nostalgiaboner is in the way, right

I don’t dislike Mario Story, I love it it’s one of my favourite games of all time, it’s Paper Mario RPG I dislike

>Those battles were the best in the series before Paper Jam came and took them to the next level.
To clarify I mean to say that the giant battles are always bad, but the attacks used by enemies in normal and boss battles improved drastically in DT. Any issue in DT is about twice as bad is BIS. Aside from the main quest that is.

Silly hats and, and a couple silly dialogue lines per each, and a silly setting they get to inhabit for you to explore, and the silly fact you can't refer to them as anything other than "enemy NPCs". Meanwhile in PM64, Gourmet Guy is Gourmet Guy, Anti Guy is Anti Guy and the General Guy is the General Guy. And this is for an almost entirely antagonistic species (should I count the PM2 bandits as Shy Guys?), to say nothing of how many unique goombas and koopas you get to meet across PM and TTYD. But "that shy guy in the train" is still "that shy guy in the train". And not even in the fun way Bowser's minions were developed in some Mario and Luigi games.

Color Splash was tropey and cute, I'll give it that, but the worldbuilding was still utter shit compared to what PM had been before. The formula carried over from SS was too limiting.

Attached: C4BGOwfWEAM-Eqj.jpg (546x458, 66.91K)

I personally loved the giant battles, rather than destroy the pace I felt that they broke the pace at about the right times to keep it interesting. Also remember that giant battles play differently from each other, and can never be repeated.

It’s great

Really good. No nostalgia, just a solid RPG. I think most people can agree with this.

Oh, my bad. It's called Super Mario RPG, btw

I'm referring to giant battles in BiS here, I haven't played dream team and the papercraft battles in paper jam are shit

I love both but TTYD had more original worlds excluding the first one.

I’m not talking about Super Mario RPG either, I love that one I’m talking about Paper Mario RPG

Attached: BD938232-FB65-473B-8DA9-113CC8EF8906.jpg (499x713, 124.54K)

Attached: Paper Mario.gif (500x340, 812.21K)

That's sort of what I'm talking about though. On my first playthrough I thought they were fine, but it's the consecutive playthroughs that ruin it for me. I've played that game more then 4 times and the giant battles have become a low point for me. To be totally honest I was getting really tired of it. Paper Jam tried to shake things up, but I found that interpretation to be especially unnecessary.

I agree with you too, but TTYD had overall worse Level design and Story segments. It is an overall better game.

Tedious trash with a pointless gimmick. TTYD shits on it in every regard and even that's just an 8/10.

I remember when they first announce Paper Mario, I thought it was a joke. They had a flash game on Nintendo's website where you play as Goombario crossing a river Frogger style and it was better than the actual game.

Why do I get the feeling you were messing around with that other user all along, mate?

The cooking system is nice. If you experiment enough and spot the method, you can predict what kind of item you will get and organically achieve most recipes. It's kind of like BotW's cooking.

Attached: 1578281408279.gif (245x329, 904.21K)

My bad, once again. You know you could probably avoid any confusion by just using the English names

What makes you think that? I wasn’t messing around with anyone, I love Mario RPG I love Mario Story both are great games but I just can’t stand Paper Mario RPG. It’s so boring, it’s just constant backtracking, the graphics are ugly, the music is obnoxious. I like that the villain isn’t Koopa and the story isn’t bad, I like the end boss but that’s about it

I play the original uncensored versions, I don’t play Seppo trash with meme translations. Sorry

Quick post your favorite partner before they get stolen by a smelly user!

wii u virtual console

I like TTYD but on some level I never cared for the crassness of it, it just reminded me of that one kid who thought Crap was a curse word. A lot of characters seemed a little too Bloo from Foster's Home
Also I felt they were getting a bit too 'hip' in a way (Mario basically has a pager, the moon base, demonic big bad, etc)

I've only played BiS 3 times all the way through, two on DS and one emulated. These playthroughs were separated by enough time that it felt like a pretty fresh revisit, so it may just be that I haven't played enough M&L to get burned out. I still absolutely love the lighthouse mech fight on the island, even though it's really easy it's just so fun to send it skidding backwards a few hundred feet into the water with a single punch. That fight makes my list of favorite boss fights because it captures the sense of scale in ways that not even other M&L giant fights can.

Yeah one of my favorite discoveries as a kid was getting a Potato from up north and finding out I could make fries with it

I am going to be greedy and claim Goombella and Vivian at the same time, fuck you all.

Attached: goombibian.jpg (820x633, 68.57K)

Paper mario master quest took this game that had pathetic difficulty, which didn't incentivize use of it's wonderful systems and mechanics, and turned it into something truly extrordinairy.

Try RetroArch

Only thing I really wish PM did better was partner relevance past their introduction. Aside from plot-centric partners like vivian, most partners were just tools to solve problems and a voice to speak for Mario when he wouldnt do more than gesture.
I think bug fables scratched that itch just right and it's a shame that PM has gone so far down the road that itll probably not come back to 64/ttyd quality

I'm a little envious of you, user. Maybe it's just a bit of a phase on my part. Dream Team could be to blame since its giant battles were really pissed me off during the hard mode.

Nothing in at TTYD was an actual improvement. The battle system changes all broke the game.

The best parts of TTYD are lesser versions of things cribbed from PM64.

Please, 64 and TTYD is filled with literal clichés for characters.

Color Splash has very witty dialogue,
subtle foreshadowing and irony. Characters with diverse personalities.

>would be who is worst parter?
In battle or in general? In battle I'd say Ms. Mowz or [Yoshi]. In general I'd say Ms. Mowz

can anyone tell me why I can't fucking time any blocks correctly after getting a new monitor? i was using a 60hz TV before and switched to 165hz monitor, but capping the framerate didnt help. the input delay is less on the new monitor. i got like halfway through the game on the TV, and can't finish because the game is balanced around not failing every timing-related input

Chapter 8 is one of my all-time favorite climaxes in a video game, overall I remember it more fondly than TTYD, though that could very well be nostalgia talking.

Check out this faggot

Retroarch for N64 emulation in general you can switch cores in seconds when something is glitching.

>no dead Kinopio
>no play boy bunny

Laugh at this clown

Just find a cheap CRT.

Got a wii u for some dumb reason? If so, homebrew it and emulate the game on there, it'll run fine.

ms mowz has a great personality though. and yoshi is great in battle. gulp is one of the most cost efficient fp moves for most of the game. great against those spikeey guys and wizzrobes since it ignores defense.
