He wants to join the fractured worlds back together and rejoin the souls of the current human race to bring back his race of people, who were their predecessors (modern people are just fragments of ancients). He was mentally enthralled by a dark god the ancient ones created to keep the world in balance and, as such, can not actually stop himself from rejecting your alternative solutions to his problem. The story ends with him showing you the way his people died in a horrifying vision of the ancient apocalypse and a duel to the death. When you kill him, he asks you to remember his people for him, so their legacy won't die.
