Can someone explain to me why people refuse to get into retro ff7

Zoomer here, ps1 ff7 is easy as fuck to pick up and plays fine, and still looks good. The pre-rendered backgrounds look fantastic, why do people refuse to play the original now?
>The remake is coming out
And is only a 1/3 of ff7 (and maybe a third at that, who the fuck knows how many episodes there's going to be)

The Remake is a souless cashgrab.

I always play the original before I play any remakes

OLD GAME NOT PRETTY
I have a friend who had no trouble downloading and obsessing over the demo but keeps putting the original off. Flavor of the Month matters.

No, if they're including the entirety of Midgard than it's the first third of the game. Midgard was something like ten hours long. The rest of Disk one has about the same length to if you totaled it out. Also, everybody should play the original. It's idiotic not to.

Mostly bad graphics. This has been the primary reason for decades. Even in the SNES days there were stupid kids who wouldn't play NES games because the graphics didn't look as pretty.

I've been playing it recently for the first time on Switch and honestly the game is boring as fuck. It's not hard in the slightest and basically all you do is mash one button.

I haven't really played any JRPG but honestly it just feels like a retextured Pokemon game.

I like to, but I don't always have time for that anymore. Still, I want to try to go through the original Trials of Mana before I try the remake; I need to go through FFA and SoM too.

>but honestly it just feels like a retextured Pokemon game.

Hey man, that's going a bit far.

I mean, Pokemon is a JRPG.

>Can someone explain to me why people refuse to get into retro ff7
-Graphix whores
-Don't play like their generic 2010's cinematic action games = "must b shit!"
-"the de-make is coming out, so why bother with shit that's older than me?! ;^)"

>y it just feels like a retextured Pokemon game.
Pokemon IS a JRPG.
And I originally GOT into FF7, because I found out it plays alot like Pokkymen, but cooler. Didn't know jack shit about RPGs of any kind at the time, but hey - I was 10.

old game bad new game good

>Nip version

Nice. I'm going through it in Nip again at the moment. While the English version has some good to it, it's definitely a lot better in Japanese. Though for the remake demo, I liked the English better for Barret's VA, dialogue, and his and Cloud's banter. The banter is much less interesting in Japanese and Barret just seems like a loud, annoying jackass.

I haven’t been keeping up with the remake at all, I’ve only seen the trailer once in Japanese playing at the store, it sounded fine to me but Ive never heard it in English

The English version just has the advantage of having someone who can actually act like a ghetto nigger. The Japanese VA does his best, but a 66 year old Japanese man isn't going to pull it off quite as well as an actual black guy who's been around actual ghetto niggers.

Yeah, just watched the trailer in English the voices are actually pretty good but the girls don’t sound cute at all

Honestly, I have a hard time playing older games with turn based mechanics now. When I was in high school, I played the fuck out of jrpgs from the PS1 era.

It's just really hard for me to do now. Maybe because I work a lot and don't get a lot of free time to put into an 80 hour rpg, I don't know.
The turn based mechanic is just so damn slow to me now. Last time I tried to play an old turn based rpg, I literally kept falling asleep playing it because I was so bored.

Attached: 1304280313138.png (221x179, 86.07K)

i love ff7 but the models are blocky ugly shit and they havent aged well
the environments look nice and the sounds of the ps1 have aged fucking beautifully but god the non battle characters just look atrocious and even in battle they're not that great looking
theres a reason people always wanted a ff7 remake instead of ff8 or ff9 remakes, those games have aged a lot better

I thought Barret's VA was white.

> Maybe because I work a lot and don't get a lot of free time to put into an 80 hour rpg, I don't know.

Yeah, I know this feel. It's been driving me crazy for a few years since a lot of games I'm interested in are JRPGs that I've missed over the years. I've been trying to play Xenogears lately, but I think I might give up because it just feels like it's moving at a snail's pace and it's mostly just dialogue boxes. I've played plenty of games that can be described the same way, some I'm nostalgic for and some I'm not, and they're fine. Xenogears just feels like it goes overboard.

I don't hate turn based games, but I can understand not liking the slowness. Even when I was in school and later a NEET, once I experienced the turbo feature most emulators have, there was no going back. I've been playing FF VII lately, but I've been turboing through the battles, and the random battles in general have been annoying me, but I hated random battles even in the 90s.

You realize in a lot of cases you're actually spending more empty time in an action game, right? The really good ones don't have the problem, but a fuckload of them are just as - if not more - time intensive with no benefit. The FF7 vs 7R example is particularly bad, in that it adds filler to bloat a couple hours into a full game.

Nope

Attached: John_Eric_Bentley.jpg (214x317, 12.67K)

Huh, what do you know.

Not him, but action games tend to be more interesting regardless because they feel more interactive. I like action games and turn based, but still, you can't deny that attacking, blocking, dodging, etc feels more interesting and interactive than selecting things from menus.

They rip us off and dont care one bit.
But this user doesnt forget it.
They got a quick buck for this shitload of fuck.

Depends on the game. A lot of ARPGs end up worse off than picking one or the other. FF7's combat always sucked, but I think the remake's is basically just elaborate fluff and still not terribly engaging. Better, but not great, and arguably wasting more time. Christ, Monstrum Nox plays better and it's made by a near doujinsoft company. Something somewhere went wrong. Maybe it'll be better in the sequels: the core of the system is fine.
Also the presentation is inferior because all of Nomura and Toriyama's vices are in play. I'm buying these solely for the combat system.

Yeah, the sad part is, I still love a lot of those old jrpgs from back in the day. I just can't get into them any more.
i think in the last year, I've tried to play Lunar(on Sega CD), Thousand Arms, Final Fantasy III, and I know there's been more but I can't remember right now. Fell asleep during all of them, or quit playing around 10 hours into them because I was bored and it felt like a chore.

It's the presentation, more than anything. If there's a lot of shit going on, it keeps me engaged better than a slow turn based rpg nowadays. It may all be flashy junk, but the flashy junk keeps my eyes on the ball better than menus and text, I guess.

>Zoomer here
You're not really one of those. You're just young.

That's a you problem, user. I've got ADHD something fierce and even I don't fall for that shit. The original FF7's strength was in presentation: camera angles, timing, pacing, design. It hurts to know people are going to opt for a product that, so far, seems inferior in many of these regards just because it's bombastic. I thought 13 taught fans that more shit going on =/= better.

>Why don't people this game that's been ported to everything, is in most people's top 10 and was massively influential.

Who exactly isn't already playing this game?
Other than mobilefags I mean?

I won't pretend that FF VII R has the most deep and engaging combat system of all time, but I had fun with it. Looking forward to the game(s). I wasn't too bothered by anything I saw in the demo outside of Shinra being the ones that blew up the reactor, but Cloud jumping from that bridge at the end there was kinda over the top even for FF VII I think when you consider that he's actually just a loser grunt. But I'm not going to knock too many points for a JRPG for being over the top. I understand the concern over Nomura though, I'm not sure about NotDemyx or some of the other story changes yet.

This is one of my favorite games. But I replayed it recently, and it just doesn't hold up. I can see why younger people would dislike it, despite it being more than a classic, a true legend in video games history.

People are so obsessed with being able to discuss shit with online randos now, social media being in their blood, that playing something that has already been discussed and isn't brand new is basically forgotten. That's one of the reasons when a TV show ends, it's immediately just gone. It's about the social credit, not the individual experience, and ironically people believe themselves to be interesting and individualistic for pursuing the FOTM hobbies, so much so that they'll define themselves in their bios with their fandoms foremost.

>That's a you problem, user.
Maybe, I could care less if it is.
>It hurts to know people are going to opt for a product that, so far, seems inferior in many of these regards just because it's bombastic. I thought 13 taught fans that more shit going on =/= better.
Your opinion, man Whatever. I never played 13, either way.

In what ways does it not hold up? I've never understood that, it still seems fine to me. I can understand the bad chibi character models if you're talking about those, but the rest of the game still seems fine to me.

>retro
Just call it the original you faggot.

Not enough cutscenes, it really doesn't tell the story as well as it could have.

The visuals do not hold up, as well as the monotonous and never-ending turn-based random encounters. As a big fan of the genre, I'm never going to stop liking the turn-based random encounters, but I'm not going to pretend it's not a relic from the past that's difficult to enjoy if you weren't there for it.

>as the monotonous and never-ending turn-based random encounters

Oh yeah, I'll give you that. Well, the turn based bit isn't bad, but I do think it could be faster, so it's great that modern ports have a turbo option. Random battles have always sucked though, there's no defending those.

I've seen enough to have absolutely no faith in it being a good adaptation, Nomura and Toriyama's trademark stupidity aside (shitty camera angles, slow drawn out scenes when the plot needs to get moving, WOOOOO EXPLOSIONS EVERYWHERE ARE YOU EXCITED YET?!?!, people flipping over skyscrapers two hours in). I'm pretty much in solely for Takahashi, he's great at combat design. Problem is the demo is kinda middling, which is crazy given the scale of the project.

Totally willing to give the gameplay the benefit of the doubt, it just isn't as tight as I would like and part of me fears that's coming up from on high due to it being a tentpole game. Again, hopefully it gets better later. He's not let me down so far, dude's the only reason Dissidia was worth a damn.

Depends on the game and design of the areas. Most used it poorly, but stuff like ye olden Dragon Quest would suck if you added field enemies. The new games do dungeons entirely different to compensate.

Unironically correct, several scenes are harmed by a lack of choreography due to budget and disc space.

>The visuals do not hold up
In terms of fidelity you're spot on. I think the same designs and shots would (mostly) work. AKA, it's fine of you squint, would be find in HD with new assets.
>as well as the monotonous and never-ending turn-based random encounters.
I'll give you that they're too slow and frequent. Game needed some adjustments.

>As a big fan of the genre, I'm never going to stop liking the turn-based random encounters, but I'm not going to pretend it's not a relic from the past that's difficult to enjoy if you weren't there for it.
I think anyone can deal with it if done well. The problem is FF7 has kinda shit gameplay.

Sure, the character models aren't the best, but it has one of the best examples of beautiful pre-rendered backgrounds.

Good point. You really don't need to redesign areas or anything for a modern remake: just recreate the existing assets in real time. Shame Square's too keen on sucking their own dicks to do that.

Honestly I just think jrpgs aren't for everyone. As much as everyone hypes it up FF7 is just another classic jrpg Final Fantasy game very similar in game play to those that came before it. I think many of the new comers to FF7 because of the remake simply aren't jrpg fans because chances are if you like jrpgs you have probably already played FF7 decades ago as it is arguably the most popular jrpg ever.

Attached: 1447030786299.jpg (524x600, 78.04K)

midgar is more like 1/5th

>>"I've never played the original."
Did he say that? Because at least he's honest about it, at least.

Same thing happens to me all the time. I lost 10 hours of progress in persona 5 and I havent touched the game since it came out.

This + people who actually care visibly stopping themselves from talking shit because they want the hypetrain money and S-E endorsement hurts my soul. It's gonna be okay from a gameplay standpoint at bare minimum and sells trillion copies, you don't need to go full Orwell mode.

Attached: 1582561446949.jpg (460x463, 64.84K)

It's extremely basic for a JRPG, which is an even bigger hurdle for people who have no experience.

There's no timing like Chrono or Dragoon, there's no classes like Tactics...

Kinda? Disc 1 is like half the game and 2/3 of the meaningful content. Game's super frontloaded. If they cut most of the padding in disc 2 it might actually come out to 1/3.
But then the pacing gets totally fucked.

This is the worst generation ever.

Playing through for the first time right now, unrelated to the remake. Barret is the best character, Aerith is worst girl and I was glad to see her Sephirothed

The graphics give it the charm though

You got trolled.

charm doesn't mean anything to a kid with a 4k monitor

I think so, but not everyone will, so I understand it if some people don't like them.

>Can someone explain to me why people refuse to get into retro ff7

Because turn based combat turns off a lot of people.

>calling philistines people

I don't like it because
>characters are stylized as legos
>there's a fucking nigger in the main party
>only other niggers in FF are from XII and XIII, i think
>3D in general is bad, i'd rather play 2D games
>ATB sucks, last good FF was III and X (minus the graphics)
Fuck the remake, just a fresh coat of paint on shit. I don't play jrpgs that are 3D anymore, they're all universally bad at this point.

>black people

oh you poor broke-brain Yas Forumsyp

Okay retard.

At least the black in XII (Reddas) isn't a stereotypical nigger. Is it so hard to just have dark skinned characters who aren't ghetto trash straight from BET? Why do these fantasy games have personalities ripped straight from the real world? It isn't the biggest flaw in the game at all, just a nitpick. I like the materia system and wish it was in a good game instead of this nu-JRPG ATB monstrosity.
The last "good" Final Fantasy was III on the Famicom.

Because turn based games just aren't popular with the wider western audience. Persona 5 is the biggest success and it only got away with it because of its flashy style rather than the game itself.

But to be brutally honest, the old ATB system also doesn't really hold up well. There's a lot of dead time just waiting for turns to come up in random encounters, making a glaring chunk of your time feel "boring".

Attached: 1579035459859.png (164x200, 31.68K)

>Midgar is about ten hours long
Maybe if you grind in the train graveyard for hours. I'm around three hours in on my first playthrough in twenty years and I'm already on my way back to Sector 7 after dealing with Don Corneo. Not exactly rushing either, I've explored every corner and talked to every NPC I can so far.

Attached: 1581982054987.jpg (744x676, 341.08K)

>monitor

You are trying WAY too hard, man.

What the fuck? I didn't quote "monitor". Must've had that highlighted by accident. Well the point I was trying to make is that you're trying too hard, dial it in the next time to try to incite people.

not the same user but I first played 7 when I was 12 and liked it. I played it again recently at 28 and it’s really boring

Beat the game last month, it's ok
The remake seems like a dumbed down souless product made for consoomers

But I genuinely don't like VII for those reasons. What's hard to understand? It looks like puke and ATB sucks. I'd rather replay classics like the first Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior III or Mother. OP asked why people won't get into retro VII and for me, it's for the aforementioned reasons. The Barret thing is admittedly a nitpick but he' a big character.

The graphics are shite. How can I take the game seriously when everyone looks like Lego blocks? And graphics are basically the only reason to play JRPGs because gameplay wise they're abhorrent.

>Complaining because a "nigger" is a character like you're from Yas Forums or Yas Forums
>Saying 3D games are bad
>Saying the last good FF was an NES one people rarely talk about these days

I like FF III a good deal too, but your post just reeked of tryhard. It reminded me of that sudden influx of "Zelda II is the best one!" that suddenly occurred here in 2012.

>And graphics are basically the only reason to play JRPGs because gameplay wise they're abhorrent

You must've stopped playing them after the PS2 days, then. They haven't been leading in the graphics department since around that time.

ITT: noone posted 7th heaven.

The mod tool even got a rework, just start it, click whatever the fuck you want from a huge catalogue and its done. easier than ever. better looking than ever. want the soundtrack? (dont you dare touch the original ost you pleb) - click it.
want better battle models? (fuck yea, do that. go for the ones which are literally the artdesigns from nomura)
want smoother textures? (DO IT)

>Because turn based games just aren't popular with the wider western audience
You do realise pokemon exists and is rather popular with western audiences right?

Oh I see that now. Sorry user. I guess it did come off that way. I really like the original games more than new ones and to me, VII+ will always be "new" in brain. You've noticed that too, right? As you've gotten older, games that seemed new 10, 15 years ago are still "new" to you in a way. I don't like 3D. I just don't.

I can read Japanese, so I don't need it. I've seen a little of the fan TL, but I wasn't impressed, it looks like they either didn't go over it very carefully or didn't actually know Japanese that well because I noticed that they didn't change the bit where Barret is called a techno freak. The word used was デクノボウ (deku no bou. It means blockhead/good-for-nothing), which Michael Basket (the guy who did the official translation) must've misread as テクノボウ (teku no bou), and it seems that the fan translators either made the same mistake somehow, or didn't pay attention.

Speak for yourself zoomie.

I'm playing RIGHT NOW as we speak.

Attached: drhftdghtrdh.png (1800x889, 1.74M)

Of course it plays fine its a fuckin RPG all you do is walk and go through menus how the fuck would it not play "fine"? It's not like there's tank controls like Resident Evil or little to no direction like King's Field.

Disgusting. Only trannies use mods.

inferior emulated version. get with the times man, we dont live in the OMG THE PC PORT HAS MIDI SOUND anymore.

this is a gourmet-fest. so many options from which YOU can decide, whats hurting the immersion and what isn't. just dont be a fag and overdo it. use things like the original soundtrack, ai-upscaled backgrounds etc and youve got a fine feast.

Are you sure you don't have ADD instead?

I like my battles to have 60 FPS fag.

>inb4 hurr durr you can have the lock removed if you do these specific things and do all kinds of bullshit
Fuck off. I like to play and go. For that PS1 is perfect. It's the version the developers envisioned.

envisioned with their restraints and problems back in the day.
PC version is far superior by now, even without mods.
Man, guess it's true, can lead the blind to the water, but drinking is what they gotta do themselves.

I can understand that. I still try to give new stuff a try and sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't. I liked the FF VII R demo, looking forward to it, which feels weird as I haven't looked forward to a Final Fantasy in 14 years, or most anything put out by Square-Enix. I do sometimes feel lost though when I see stuff like Persona 5 and Xenoblade 2 getting praised to the high heavens when they just seem so meh to me.

>The pre-rendered backgrounds look fantastic, why do people refuse to play the original now?
They look extremely blurry and the field models/3d models in general look hilariously outdated. Hell FF7 felt dated to me back in 2000 after playing FF8/9. Not that it bothers me but you would be surprised by the amount of people who can't get over outdated graphics.

What exactly is so much better? I don't need new bullshit character models. The old ones don't bother me at all, I even find them to be pretty funny and charming. Having a sinister story delivered by characters who barely look better than LEGO figures what was always made FF7 charming. It never took itself too seriously and wasn't mega pretentious like 8.

What else is there? Back grounds? There are now as beautiful as ever. You don't fucking need any mods to get a great experience with 7.

Attached: 1.png (1920x1080, 2.25M)

>ePSX

Attached: 52.png (1920x1080, 2.68M)

Hmmm, I might try it myself, then if someone like you liked the demo. I really liked Dragon Quest XI on the switch with its 2D mode. I didn't like the normal version on the PS4 but the 2d stuff is pretty cool. I really hope Square Enix at least attempts to make retro style Final Fantasy again. Their constant need for experimentation is so off-putting to me but I'm just a retard I guess...

>Having a sinister story delivered by characters who barely look better than LEGO figures what was always made FF7 charming

FF VII was a game caught in the middle of the transition to 3D. It was a 3D FF that tried to make use of new technology while using design principles from the 2D games, and it resulted in something really unique. You could see by FF VIII that the transition was basically complete.

Has anyone figured out how to rip KH models to replace the ones in FF7 like this user.

youtube.com/watch?v=VeY9qd6d8Ms

Clicking attack in menus to watch the exact same animations a million times is boring user

Not him, but I play on an emulator just for turbo speed and save file modding when I feel like it, like when I don't feel like breeding Chocobos.

PS1 games look like shit on modern TVs. It's probably better to experience them through emulators than playing the original ones on HDTV.

FF7 is historically important and set a lot of precedents, but it has not aged well outside of maybe the soundtrack.

It's good that they are making the remake for zoomers to enjoy, there are very real barriers for young people to enjoy the original. You really have to put it in context to enjoy it. There are so many glaring improvements in the philosophy of gaming since 7 came out, starting a playthrough of the original on my Switch after trying the demo the other day has really underlined this.

I feel lucky that I will get to enjoy both in their respective timeframes.

Nigga I'm not suggesting you play the original, I'm suggesting mednafen (bettlenx) on Retroarch which is all around a better PS1 emulator.

The guy textured the first boss? That's some dedication to modding.

From how it sounds, you probably won't like the demo, but you've got nothing to lose to try it. I liked DQ XI too, though I mostly played in the 3D mode, it just looked so good. SE's need to change things up every game is a good and a bad thing, I think. Sometimes they throw out stuff that works, but at least they don't fall into a rut and release the same game with a new coat of paint every year, I respect that they don't do that at least. If most other developers had released FF VII, they'd have just stuck close to that formula until people got sick of it.

A remake like was something like this would have been perfect.

no blurry backgrounds. ai-upscaled. they aren't goodlooking from the get-go at all sadly.
midi sounds exchanged for ps1 ones or orchestra, whatever you prefer. worldmap textures.
as i said, YOU can choose what you do, idiot. but hey, whats different is instantly bad right? dont even try to look through a catalogue when you know upfront, without knowing whats inside, that you dont like it already. dont even try to smell a new perfume, cus youve had your old one for 40 years. its the only good one.
dont even try anything else, because you might like it, and Yas Forums wouldn't be the place for you anymore, since you're nu-Yas Forums, the one that thinks hating on everything is what makes you unique.

Are you alright user?

Ah, okay. I've never understood the mednafen or Retroarch mania. I've tried them out and I just don't see the appeal. I've been using ePSXe just fine for like, 10+ years.

has been done since ages on qhimm, sadly these models have been banned by square themself. but there are a lot of good choices with the new mod tools. one click and go.
everything has been textured by now, with several differences, artstyles or just the old ones upscaled.

No

For me only NES RPGs did not age well. Pretty much everything from SNES and up is perfectly enjoyable even today.

theres a save file modding tool called chocobo something for pc tho. does wonders. turbo speed i give ya.

Fuck Square. I can do whatever the fuck I want with my games. Are there any instructions on how to do it? I'll gladly do it myself.

The Black Chocobo tool? Yeah, that's the one I was talking about.

Just checked out this guys channel (Think it might be a girl though) and found this.

I want ponytail KH Tifa now
youtube.com/watch?v=Uk2MPrtHsYI

Yeah, I can pretty well enjoy anything as long as it's good, I like some 80s RPGs as well, but I tried the NES Earthbound recently and it was just more irritating than fun to me, and a bit part of that was how awful the inventory was.

if you find them as a iso file, just load it into 7th heaven and you're good to go.
if you find the models in the old format, you gotta extract the lpgs etc... thats pretty long. look up a guide on qhimm.

>nobody recommending the new threat mod
really

Thanks user.

who is refusing to play the original?

np.
to each their own, i like the new modding options but dont like new threat. but it got a surge in popularity after maxdoodguy played it.

Lots of people. A friend of mine who hates turn based games and loves remakes only got through the first reactor before giving up.

Been kinda holding off on the PC version since I heard field models have mouths to them for some reason. No way around this? Are there mods that disable those without doing something else?

Yeah, there's a no mouth mod.
