Iraq was stable. It was improving as a nation. Saddam was a huge factor in the identity of the Iraqi people as one people. He could have been their best shot at a true unified nation. Iraq is now a failed state. Power abhors a vacuum and there was no one strong enough to replace him. So you get dozens of different groups fucking each other and the country up. They couldn’t pull this shit with Saddam because he’d skip the politics and get straight to killing all of them.

He was Iraq’s last chance at nationhood. They will Balkanize eventually, the clocks running out.
