There were two trials. One in China that China leaked the results of. They claimed it failed, then Gilead said that the China one actually had insufficient participation so it closed. There was a second trial Gilead conducted outside of China, and this is the one they are now reporting. Prelim figures I've seen include a ~30% reduction in disease duration and mortality. This isn't surprising to me at all, remdesivir is an anti-viral, no shit an anti-viral will inhibit a virus. Certainly better than an anti-parasitic (HCQ) or abx (zithromax).

The original trial results were rushed and they saw that it didn't improve recovery times, but now, after waiting longer and comparing recovery rates, they see that Remdesivir IS effective at inhibiting RdRp and halting further spread of the virus, thus increasing recovery times.
The idea is the covid-19 uses RNA dependent RNA polymerase to replicate in cells. Remdesivir, and zinc ionophores like hydroxychloroquine brings in zinc into the cell and it inhibits this replication. Not sure if remdesivir works with zinc, but the mechanic is the same -- it cucks covid from replication in the cell.
