These are private companies and workers have protections for striking under federal law.
There is also an amendment preventing the government from forcing labor without pay.

You do realize that a lot of farms are located out in the sticks and that it's not feasible to transport large numbers of live animals on a daily basis to far away locations. Makes sense that the slaughterhouses would be relatively close to said farms since it's easier to transport finished product than live product.
