So with that in mind, you should trying recouping the costs from that drone. Maybe see if you can get a commercial license and see if people are looking for basic inspections/photos whatever. Or even simpler maybe just make a movie/you tube channel.

Actually, not really. most of the expense would go into the camera hardware and long range stuff. because of some serious kikery, there's basically a single long range solution that's worth a damn and it's super expensive - $300-ish for a system. that doesn't include gps hardware either, or a controller, or a video display (which is another large expense)
that being said, if he's looking for "fun to throw around after work and on weekends," yeah he could have gotten something 1000x better. dji prioritizes stability and flight time, whereas acrobatic quads prioritize dumping as much current into the motors as quickly as possible to turn harder and fly faster.

A lot actually. The higher cost drones use gps to stabilize and account for winds. They can also follow you if you want. Good for action stuff like biking. High quality camera too. They're pretty cool. I paid $200 for a chink one with most of the same features and they're great. Dive bombed a homeless encampment a few hundred feet away. Good times.
