The gist of it is that communism stopped being good for the jews. You'll recall that in 1953 East Germany had an uprising that was essentially National Socialist in nature, but it isn't recalled that way. The Soviets backed down and let the Germans handle economic reforms and implementations their way. In 1956 the Hungarians had an essentially National Socialist uprising. The Soviets sent tanks in, but they didn't go as hard on the "counter revolutionaries" as they might have years ago. Rakosi was exiled. Kaganovich was purged. Solzhenitsyn was released from the gulag. The USSR and its satellites essentially moved "right", at least in the cultural/national sphere. Ironically, or unironically, the socialist economic system was better able to identify and move against actors and groups engaging in rake-offs.
