Here's one thing to keep in mind:
Rationally, there's no reason to worry about the species at all. It is completely irrational to worry about *anything* that will occur after you personally are dead. In order to enthusiastically undertake future-oriented activities, it is necessary for us to *irrationally identify* with future human beings, despite the absence of any reason to do so.
One way we can trick ourselves into doing this is by projecting ourselves into the future imaginatively. If we imagine *ourselves*, say, colonizing Mars some day, it makes it easier for us to care if the human race as a whole manages to do that - even though, rationally, we *shouldn't* care, because if it happens after we are dead it has nothing to do with us and it doesn't benefit us in any way.
That imaginative projection becomes radically more difficult if the type of human being we are completely disappears. If human beings genetically modify themselves to be giant insects (for example), it makes it much more difficult for me to imaginatively convince myself that the future of that genemod insect species matters to me.
