They declared it moot because the law which the case was based on has been changed since the trial began. They're just sending it back to the lower courts for now.

They didn't uphold New York's gun law.

New York had realized they were going to lose, and so they tactically repealed that section of their gun law so they could argue that the case was moot. They didn't want a precedent established, so they gave in on the technical point raised by this case.

Unfortunately this is not an uncommon maneuver on the part of state governments, and there is case law on both sides regarding whether they should be allowed to get away with it. On this particular case, Kavanaugh accepted the state government's argument that the case had become moot. Not the best outcome, but certainly not "upholding" the gun control law.

The bill of rights are inherent rights. They are god given, not granted. No agency, no body established by men, and no person can infringe upon these rights.

They may establish laws which restrict the exercise of these rights, but by doing so they become enemy combatants. At that point, it is up to an individual to live as if they are under occupation by a hostile force which seeks to enslave them, or to resist.

Always remember that anybody who attempts to subvert your inherent rights is an enemy.

Mootness doctrine and prohibition against advisory opinions, etc. More important to adhere to the process than it is to try to engineer a result. The process is designed to reach the right result, even if that doesn't always happen.

I'm sure there's already another case being set up (if not already winding its way through the lower courts), to keep the 2nd amendment fight up. There are entire industries, on both sides of the politics, that have sprung up around these disputes. Conservatives were a little late to the game, but they're engaged now, and have matured their apparatus in the last ten to 20 years.
