Most of you people seem to take the biggest issue with the Hudud punishments yet you don't seem to understand that these are boundary punishments, in other words they are almost never carried out because the judge has to use every ounce of discretion or work around before prescribing the punishment. The purpose is for the betterment of society and to prevent people from doing evils in the first place. Also there are many stipulations and conditions that must be met in order to carry out one of these rulings. For example, the one that Brits hate the most is the stoning for adultery yet they don't understand that a woman accused of adultery is not simply thrown into a pit and stoned to death. There have to be certain numbers of witnesses, we have to determine the credentials of these witnesses, the sincerity, etc. You don't just take someone's word for it.
It's the same thing in Britain. If they tell you you can't park on this spot or you'll get a £300 fine most people will resist parking on that spot because they don't want a charge of £300. Same thing in Islam. The punishments for stealing and sexual immorality are there to deter you in the first place. And no man will be punished for stealing a loaf of bread to stop his children dying of hunger. This is permissible.

I don't think people are objecting to the lack of due process when a woman is stoned to death for committing adultery. I'm pretty sure your average Brit would still find that punishment barbaric even if you could prove without a doubt that a woman had been unfaithful.
