I've found the overwhelming majority of fellow Jews extremely welcoming, if not perhaps overly welcoming, when confronted with my status as a convert. They were very curious and flattered as to why I would want to join their people. I actually don't think I've spoken with a single person who mentioned me being anything other than a full fledged Jew. Nor have I ever gotten the feeling I was being treated in any way every other Jew wasn't.

It depends on how sincere and committed you are. And on the rabbi. I can't answer that really, for me it was easy as I was genuinely passionate about converting and already knew tons of the history. Learning Hebrew was a little tricky but you don't need to be fluent or anything. Really it's not that hard, they just want to make sure you're determined and genuine. So it just takes patience, best way to describe it is think of it as being like applying to become a US citizen. It's not just fill out a form and you're suddenly a Jew. It takes time and you need to prove you want it and are ready.

Well, was your mother a Jew? Was it just her father that was Jewish? If that's the case then no you'd still need to fully convert unless her mother was also Jewish.
