This image was taken on April 20, 2020. It shows the fragments are about 6" (seconds) apart. Given the distance of the comet from earth, 142,001,849 km, 6" is 4 130 km in length. The fragments are most likely to come further apart and it will lead to maximum dispersion of matter around the perihelion of their orbit. The orbit of these fragments will be different from the original calculation. Magnitude is projected to be in the negatives.
Was the whole Coronavirus scare just a manufactured crisis intended to get people to stockpile food and other supplies in the event that we get hit by bits of that comet and really do need to shelter in place for months?

Cool photo.

>N O T H I N G B U R G E R Brainlet here, is that sarcastic or is it a nothing?
Jack Walker
Cute cgi
Christopher Cooper
nothing

It's worse they told everyone not to stockpile and that food supply chains are going to keep going normally. They shut down most terrestrial observatories too which makes zero sense since those are always in remote locations. There is now 3 comets flying around and a pseudo pandemic going on with the worse lock-down ever witnesses in our civilizations ever.
Nathaniel Rogers
super sarcastic

Probably, we have a number of comets coming next month (look up comet swan also) and an asteroid coming in about 3 days
They say it's disintegrating but it's really just fragmented winch is two different thing.
Gavin Barnes
What would disintegrating even mean in space? Gassing off until it's.. just a big gascloud?
Blake Ross
Theoretically, depending on what it's made of, it'd be a result of micro/macroparticulate impacts, and breakdown from bombardment with various stellar & cosmic radiation. t. completely talking out of my ass

When iirc Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacted Jupiter in the 90s, Jupiter's gravity caused the comet to break into smaller chunks before it impacted youtube.com/watch?v=_ffYUWozpzs I'm no expert though.
>significant non-gravitational forces acting over the past several weeks Are they talking about rotational forces from it spinning or what?
Jonathan White
Comets are mostly made of ice/rock. The ice is not just water but methane, co2, co, cyanide etc. As comets come closer to the sun at about the distance of Jupiter they begin to glow due to sunlight. The heat caused by solar radiation cause the ice to sublimate into vapor and the rock is "loosen" and breaks apart. Note that this comet survived the trip 4000 years ago and it's coming back now.

What is it’s actually alien space ships lol

Zience? Me too GUIZE xd

I was thinking about this the other day. Oumamu was some sort of probe. Now they sent a more direct means of contact, like on planet probes or satellites to be placed in system that "broke off" from the bigger ship. I doubt it's likely. but it's fun to think about.
