To be fair if you exclude NY, the stats would be closer to equal. New York just sucks, and even if they had a conservative governor, it would instead weigh unfavorably for Republicans.
I do think that the conservative way of life (living in a self-contained communities spread out across the states, and this is true especially in the South) greatly reduces the spread. Conservatives are better disposed to deal with these problems, then liberals who are completely disconnected from their environment.

While I am suspicious on how many deaths dem states are reporting due to covid. I feel like a number of those states not only are larger with more spread out populations, but also many are located in more southern areas of US. I can only assume FL and TX fares better against covid thanks to it being a more hot and humid environment.
