They believed in "soul sleep" and at the Second Coming the bodies of the dead would arise and live in the New Jerusalem on Earth. Christians had to make up Heaven when it became obvious that Jesus wasn't coming back since it was supposed to happen during the lifetime of the apostles but they had been dead for many years.
