The West on face masks

So this is the thing that puzzles me.
Why people in the West are so against wearing face masks in public? No matter how you look at it, wearing masks provides huge benefits on prevention of infection disease.
If there is a shortage, why don't they just say as is? Instead the entire West is throwing all sorts of excuses, it doesn't work, general public don't know how to wear it correctly, it only prevent infected people to pass onto the others, etc.
What's the fundamental reason behind such huge divide between East and West on this tiny face mask thing?

Life in 1918 was pretty fucking rough so people had a better sense of what was important and what wasn't. We got way too comfy and decadent over the years.
